How much flex can Europe flex? ??♂? Flexibility - it's the magic key that will allow grids to adapt to fluctuations in supply and demand, reducing the need for costly and time-consuming infrastructure upgrades. ???? To achieve climate neutrality, Europe wants to push renewables and electrification, but when it comes to the required additional flexibility, it is actually scrambling to adapt the power grid - especially at the distribution level. Of course, things aren't so simple when it comes to critical infrastructure such as energy. This is why Agora Energiewende, in collaboration with DNV, has identified key strategies to move grid flexibility forward: 1. ?????????????? ??????-???????? ???????????????????? ????????????????????: Allow electricity producers and large consumers to connect to the grid with limited capacity during high demand periods for faster and more cost-effective connections. 2. ?????????????? ???????? ???? ?????? ??????????????: Incentivize consumers to use electricity during off-peak times, aligning demand with grid capacity and reducing the need for extensive grid reinforcements. 3. ????????-???????? ???????????????????? ?????? ??????????????: Improve real-time monitoring to manage loads efficiently, using advanced sensors and control systems to respond quickly to grid changes. 4. ???????????????????? ?????? ?????????????????? ????????????????????: Establish clear guidelines and incentives for system operators to adopt flexibility solutions, including regular assessments of flexibility needs and national objectives for non-fossil flexibility. 5. ?????????????????????? ????????????????????????: Ensure coordinated action from system operators, regulators, governments, and consumers to deploy the necessary technical and managerial tools effectively. 6. ???????? ?????????????????? ?????? ????????????????????: Share successful examples that help other regions learn from optimized grid operations and reduced costs, inspiring the deployment of further flexibility solutions. ?? Recently, EirGrid Group published the latest update to their #TomorrowsEnergyScenarios report, again modelling iron-air batteries as the key technology for enabling their most ambitious, 'self sustaining' scenario. There's lots to comment on, but I especially liked this chart which shows that multi-day storage can have an enormous impact on curtailment. The duration of events where there is too much or too little renewable generation are increasing. This means shorter duration technologies are often at the wrong state of charge to react to system needs - i.e. if you have a 4 hour battery and your event is 12 hours long, after the battery is full/empty it will have to sit and wait for the imbalance to shift. Iron-air, with its 100 hour duration, has the capacity to maximise its operations at any given point. The net-result is much less curtailment, and much less reliance on fossil generation to fill the gaps when generation is too low. In the end, energy wastage is reduced by almost 80%, a cost-effective and efficient solution!
