“I'd like to see local governments empowered to take action, especially those that already have climate action plans." Therese Dorau, ERI assistant director for climate policy and implementation says Indiana's recently published state climate action plan does a good job of building on the climate action work Hoosier communities have been doing in recent years. The plan prioritizes carbon-cutting investments in: ? electric generation ??? residential and commercial buildings ?? transportation ?? industry ?? waste and materials management ?? agriculture Indiana is one of 45 states that developed climate action plans through the EPA's Climate Pollution Reduction Grants program. The submitted plan is part of Indiana's bid to secure a portion of $4.6. billion in federal funding that can be used to implement measures outlined in the plan. https://lnkd.in/guPnvvEP

Vermont is on the verge of passing a pioneering measure requiring major polluting companies to contribute to the cost of damages caused by the climate crisis. Other states, including New York and California, are closely monitoring this move. The proposed climate superfund bill, which is modeled after the Environmental Protection Agency's Superfund program, would require major #fossilfuel companies operating in the state to pay billions of dollars for their past emissions. If approved, this measure would make Vermont the first state in the US to hold fossil fuel companies accountable for their contributions to global warming. #ClimateAction #Vermont https://lnkd.in/dMXhq5bS

As impacts from climate change are accelerating, historic federal funding of $4 billion is boosting city resilience, cutting emissions, and improving health outcomes. Climate Mayors’ member city, the City of New Orleans and Mayor LaToya Cantrell were awarded $50 million from the US Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) to install solar panels on low and middle income homes in an effort to reduce climate pollution that is contributing to more intense hurricanes and extreme weather. Alongside New Orleans, other US cities are utilizing funds from the EPA’s Climate Pollution Reduction Grants to implement projects that are reducing emissions and advancing environmental justice. ?? Accountability in Action: Vermont's Bold Move Towards Climate Justice! ?? In an unprecedented step, Vermont has introduced a groundbreaking "climate Superfund" bill, poised to hold corporations accountable for their environmental impact. This legislation proposes charging companies for weather-related damages, redirecting the financial responsibility back to those who contribute the most to climate change. As professionals committed to sustainability, we must applaud Vermont’s initiative in pushing for corporate accountability. But the journey doesn't end here. Each company can play a pivotal role in mitigating environmental impact. ?? Carbon Offsets: A proactive approach for businesses to compensate for their emissions. By investing in projects that reduce or remove greenhouse gases, companies not only adhere to emerging regulations but also demonstrate a genuine commitment to our planet's health. Let’s take inspiration from Vermont and act now. Implementing carbon offsets is not just about compliance—it's about leadership in sustainability. Embrace this opportunity to lead the change. ?? https://lnkd.in/d3NzWJZY #ClimateAction #Sustainability #CorporateResponsibility #CarbonOffsets #EnvironmentalImpact

Vermont is moving forward with a Climate Superfund Act, the first of its kind to quantify the economic effects of climate change on Vermont citizens and attribute costs to oil and energy companies that the State deems liable. The legislation is modeled after the EPA's superfund program forcing companies to pay for the remediation & cleanup for environmental damage they inflicted. While this is noble, maybe too much, it's pretty hard to imagine how little Vermont State can accurately and quantify the attributable damage to Vermont citizens and then enforce punitive penalties on companies with global scale and support of larger, often international governing bodies. https://lnkd.in/ezRAdWK3

White House executive actions garner climate headlines, but #ClimateAction of lasting impact has to come from bipartisan efforts at a more local level. After all, America has been into, out of, and back into the #ParisAgreement over the past decade. And who knows what comes next. By far, the most encouraging sign I've seen lately are the plans nearly nearly every state, tribal region, and major metro area developed and submitted to the EPA by March 1, under the Climate Pollution Reduction Grant program funded through the federal #InflationReductionAct. Red states, blue states, and purple states are all stepping up. And once the review process is complete, we should see exciting programs rolling out locally by late summer. The plans for Georgia Environmental Protection Division and the Atlanta Regional Commission were greatly informed by the work of Drawdown Georgia and the Georgia Climate Project, which should lead to even greater precision and cost-effectiveness in the programs and measure to be implemented. https://lnkd.in/eRwBYGtf

The South is beginning to realize its full potential to make progress on climate. For the first time, every state and large municipality in our region – in Alabama, Tennessee, Virginia, Georgia, North Carolina, and South Carolina – has a roadmap to reduce greenhouse gas?emissions and other harmful air pollution.? Today, states and cities submitted Priority Climate Action Plans (PCAP) as the first deliverable under the Environmental Protection Agency's Climate Pollution Reduction Planning Grant program. We applaud the Governors and Mayors that are taking action to draw historic federal funding to reduce greenhouse gases and other air pollution and protect communities in the South from extreme heat, floods, and storms. The PCAP plans – in tandem with a recent boom in clean energy manufacturing investments – reflect growing momentum to address the increasing impacts of climate change and spur investment in a clean, resilient, economy. They position our region to compete for $4.6 billion in competitive grants and draw other public and private investments to implement high-impact projects that will protect our most vulnerable residents. SELC looks forward to working with states and localities to implement climate solutions across the South. Learn more: https://selc.link/3UThSzM
