The final whistle has blown on another Premier League season, leaving a void in my weekends that even the most thrilling five day rain-effected cricket match can't fill. The rollercoaster ride of following Newcastle United, with its endless "ifs," "buts," and "maybes," is unmatched. But while I'm still basking in the afterglow of winning the "Better than Man Utd Trophy" ( ?? ), my mind has wandered to three other Premier League clubs: Liverpool, West Ham, and Brighton. They're all grappling with the same daunting question: succession. How do you replace a manager who has become synonymous with the club's identity? How do you ensure a smooth transition without derailing the progress that's been made? Rumors are swirling about appointments at two of these clubs, while Brighton, ever the meticulous planners, undoubtedly have a strategy in place. This brings me to a realisation that extends far beyond football: the importance of a succession plan for business. Over the years the topic of "planning my exit" comes up all the time in my conversations with business owners. Crafting a succession plan is rarely straightforward. It's a complex puzzle with countless variables, many of which are beyond our control. As the new season kicks off, it'll be fascinating to see whose succession plan proves most successful. And hey, maybe a little healthy competition will push all three clubs to even greater heights (as long as it's behind Eddie's Mags!)

? Set-Piece Struggles & Defensive Trends: A Deep Dive into Manchester United's Season So Far! Manchester United's defensive vulnerabilities have been on full display, with set-piece struggles costing them key moments 7 goals conceded from corners this season alone, top three in the Premier League. This weekend, Nottingham Forest secured their first away league win at Old Trafford in 30 years but also exploited their weaknesses with precision. ?? Key Stats Highlighting United's Defensive Woes: ??39% of goals conceded from set-pieces (league average: 17.6%). ??Inswinger-to-Outswinger Corner Ratio Against: nearly double the league average. ??High SCA% Against (9.56%), reflecting defensive build-up issues. ?? What Needs to Change: ?? Improvements in aerial duels and marking strategies. ??Better execution from set-piece specialists Carlos Fernandes and Andreas Georgson. ??Tactical adjustments in a hectic December schedule, with matches against Viktoria Plzen, Manchester City, and Tottenham on the horizon. ??? The Youth Factor Despite the challenges, Leny Yoro’s debut against Nottingham Forest offered a glimpse of hope. With a 92.1% pass completion rate and strong ball progression metrics, the 18-year-old could provide the modern, ball-playing center-back United desperately needs. The rise of academy graduate Godwill Kukonki adds to this potential youth-driven rebuild under Ruben Amorim. Could this be the foundation for another Class of '92-style revolution? A big shoutout to Oktay Karaku? for the brilliant ideas and visualizations that bring this analysis to life! His graphs on defensive stats and set-piece vulnerabilities are invaluable in understanding the bigger picture. ??

Given Leeds now sit top of the Championship tree going into the new year and with hopes of making the Premier League growing - I found an extremely interesting article by Alex Keble on how Nottingham Forest managed to survive in the 2022-23 season, with potential implications for Leeds should they achieve promotion. These key implications include: - Reduce build-up play - Leeds currently sit 1st for number of touches in the middle 3rd of the pitch, short passes attempted & completed and number of progressive passes, whilst 24th for long passes completed. Nottingham Forest found success in deviating from their build-up style of play and played a more direct counter attacking football, allowing their explosive front 3 to do damage in transition. With their progressive passing falling, they saw their shots faced drop significantly, giving them an opportunity to squeeze out vital results. - Limit the press and drop deep - No team had a higher number of turnover's within 40 meters of the opposition goal than Leeds last year according to Opta, and Leeds' PPDA figure ranked 2nd only to Southampton, with the trend continuing this year. The linked article highlights how Nottingham Forest had similar metrics before promotion but struggled when trying to implement the same tactic against defences with higher calibre ball playing defenders. The transition to a low block had a significant impact on their fortunes, especially in tight games. - Conceding possession is not always a negative - Leeds currently average 62.8% possession, which is comfortably the highest in the Championship and is a key aspect of Farke's philosophy. Nottingham Forest meanwhile, chose to concede possession to the opposition, but their effectiveness in the moments that they had the ball gave them the firepower they needed to stave off relegation. An interesting article by Bruin Sports Analytics highlights an alternative link between possession and expected points which should also be considered as it highlights that there are a number of variables alongside possession that need to be considered (https://lnkd.in/edidbeFX). Whilst squad abilities and styles can affect how a team should approach the Premier League, with survival even more paramount due to money that accompanies the richest league in the world, Leeds should look to previous examples of surviving teams and incorporate aspects of their approach to maximise their chances of success. The full article can be found here - https://lnkd.in/eUG86hhk - I would highly recommend giving it a read!

The Hollow Crown. Ruben Amorim, Manchester United's new, much-lauded and hitherto losing coach goes into Monday's home game against a revived and free-scoring Newcastle United knowing that he may become the most short-lived Red Devil's manager since Walter Crickmer’s 43-game reign in 1931-32. Amorim is the 10th person to have led United since the departure of Sir Alex Ferguson in 2013. All--even the cup-winning José Mourinho, Louis van Gaal and Eric ten Hag--have been branded ManU "failures" by the media and exacting standards of supporters. And yet, across all spheres, how often has good king, followed good king? Mediocrity, at best, and decline invariably follows the rule of a strong, successful leader. Look, for example, at United after the departure of Sir Matt Busby: Again a succession of lesser managers; struggling to replicate days of glory, with the odd second-tier cup win thrown in as a sop, and a string of false dawns. Yet this time around, I'd argue that Manchester United's relative decline has been precipitated by the club's owners. And not by poor coaching. For as long as the Glazer family own the club, Manchester United will never regain its top position in the EPL and fulfil its destiny of winning with style and glory. The Glazers have hollowed-out--if not looted--one of the greatest sporting teams in the world and handed Ruben Amorim--and the nine men before him--not just a hollow crown but it would seem a crown of thorns. https://lnkd.in/d5G_Ny28

5000-1. When Leicester City kicked off the 2015-16 Premier League season, bookmakers rated their title chances at 5000-1. For perspective, they offered better odds (2000-1) on finding Elvis Presley alive. The team had barely escaped relegation the previous season, spending 140 days at the bottom of the table. Their entire team cost less than what Manchester City paid for a single player. Their striker, Jamie Vardy, was playing amateur football and working in a factory just four years earlier. Their manager, Claudio Ranieri, had been recently fired by Greece after losing to the Faroe Islands. Yet something magical happened. Match by match, this team of castoffs and bargain buys started winning. They didn't just compete. They dominated. Vardy broke the Premier League record by scoring in 11 consecutive matches. Manchester United, Chelsea, and Manchester City all fell to Leicester's fast-paced, fearless style. Key lessons for 2025: - The "impossible" becomes possible when a group of people absolutely refuse to believe in their limitations. Leicester didn't just overperform. They rewrote what was considered achievable. - Leadership matters. Ranieri created a culture where players dared to dream big, famously using a bell in training to keep players focused, saying "Dilly-ding, dilly-dong, come on, wake up!" - Past performance doesn't dictate future success. As Vardy said: "Nobody gave us a chance, but we never stopped believing in ourselves." The miracle was complete on May 2, 2016, when Leicester clinched the title, becoming champions of England for the first time in their 132-year history. It remains the greatest upset in sports history. A testament that with belief, unity, and courage, even the "impossible" can become reality. Image credit: The sporting news
