Your Washing Machine Impacts the Environment! Every wash cycle has a footprint: 1?? Water Usage: Washing machines consume up to 50 litres per load, contributing to water wastage. 2?? Energy Consumption: They use high amounts of energy, particularly with hot water cycles. 3?? Microplastic Pollution: Synthetic fabrics release microplastics into the water during washes, which end up in oceans and harm marine life. 4?? Detergents: Chemicals in detergents can pollute waterways, affecting ecosystems. Odegon products trap Odour in clothing- meaning your garments need washing less frequently! Small changes = Big impact ??#EcoFriendly #SustainableLiving #GreenLaundry

? Did you know using paper towels can be a big environmental drain? A recent MIT study found that paper towels create significantly more carbon emissions than other drying methods. Here's how to be more eco-friendly: Use hand dryers when available. Opt for reusable cloth towels at home. Upcycle old t-shirts into drying rags! (They're headed for the trash anyway, right?) Simple changes can make a big difference! ?? #sustainability #gogreen #savetheplanet #lesswaste

The Ayes have it for the Microplastic Filters (Washing Machines) Bill Today, Tuesday 29th October 2024 in the House of Commons. Alberto Costa introduced the Bill which will require washing machine manufacturers to fit microfibre-catching filters in all new domestic and commercial washing machines. Importantly the Bill also aims to raise awareness of the polluting effects of microplastics in our Ocean, rivers, seas and waterways; to make provision for promotion about the use of microfibre capturing filters in washing machines and consequences of microfibres in the water system. Two years on, presenting the bill again, supported and co-sponsored by cross party MPs, Alberto Costa made the case for fitting microfibre filters, including how microfibres are polluting our Ocean, seas, rivers and watersystems, and are having a detrimental effect on planet and human health and to encourage the government to work with washing machine manufacturers. This bill has the support of the stakeholders, including the The WI (National Federation of Women's Institutes) cross party MPs, solution providers, OEMs, Scientists and Environmental Orgs I believe that this is a sector where the UK can be a global leader and can support UK innovation. Cleaner Seas Group? have developed filters as part of a circular system to capture microfibres, and ensure this pervasive pollution will not escape into our precious global water systems once captured. The second reading of the Bill will be 7th March 2025. Please put the date in your diaries and lend your support to the Bill via your MP. Thank you Alberto for believing in this Bill and ensuring it stays on the Westminster Agenda. ‘3rd time’s a charm’ ???????? Rt Hon Steve Reed OBE MP Fiona Thomas Tobias Arn? The Ayes have it! Microplastic Filters (Washing Machine) Bill! India Needs to Follow the Lead: Research Supports Microfibre Filters in Washing Machines The UK Parliament has backed the Microplastic Filters (Washing Machines) Bill, which calls for mandatory microfibre-catching filters in new washing machines. This proactive step tackles the hidden menace of microplastic pollution, which impacts our waters and health. ? In my research on microfibre emissions from washing machine laundering and its emission estimation study in India ??, I proposed similar measures, calling for mandatory filters to curb pollution at the source. It's time for India to follow suit and set standards to protect our water systems and boost sustainable innovation. Whilst we can all agree that microfibres are harmful to the oceans and marine life, and ultimately humans via the seafood consumed, we have already seen some appliances with an internal or external filter, that have had limited take up - why? Additional costs? how will this be possible when there are already around 2m people in the UK in appliance poverty. What's the process for safely disposing of the captured microfibres? What about addressing the issue at the start i.e. legislating against products that contain fabric that generates these micro fibres in the first place? These are usually at the cheaper end of the purchase scale for garments. I'm not against things that protect the planet and its life - quite the contrary - I'm just not convinced that increasing the cost washing machines is the answer to this issue, and in the great scheme of things that are impacting our planet is this really the largest issue that will bring about the biggest benefit?

Praying/crossing fingers, since I am in the USA and have no representatives in UK. Next questions: how difficult would it be to retrofit existing machines with a filter like this? Designer input? Also, who might take on/ propose a similar bill? Third, can anyone share progress or efforts to get plastic out of our clothes in the first place? Better shopping choices? Super interesting and useful info for Sustainability Clubs Network (I am coaching start up Clubs via Zoom, if interested; they are small, intimate, fun and designed to support the members).

Use cold water. Did you know that 90% of the energy used by your washing machine is as a result of heating the water. Many of the clothing washing detergents work in hot, warm or cold water and produce satisfactory results. You can save about 50% on energy costs pew year by switching from warm water to cold water washing. In addition cold water washing reduces wrinkles which reduces additional energy needs for ironing. In addition cold water washing will reduce shrinking and fading of clothes thereby giving your clothing a longer lifecycle. #thesustainableorganizer #sustainable #climatechange #sustainableorganizer #sustainability #sustainableliving #sustainablelifestyle #sustainablehome #sustainablelife #gogreen #savetheplanet #plasticfree #reducereuserecycle #bethechange #climateaction #ecofriendly
