Arsenal Women are making history, with an all-female team running the grounds and tech operations in the upcoming North London Derby on 3 March. This momentous occasion is a testament to the club's commitment to driving change in women's sport. The club partnered with the WSL, Women in Football and the Grounds Management Association to make this happen. It's inspiring to see women and organisations collectively come together as a driving force and taking action for the betterment of women's sport, both on and off the pitch. "A team is distinct from other social bonds as the unifying element is the shared pursuit of a common goal, whether it be winning a World Cup, achieving a scientific breakthrough, or winning an election. Often, however, the relationship between teammates, their leaders, and their supporters extends far beyond the mere pursuit of a goal. A team quickly becomes a microcosm of broader societal phenomena, as issues such as power, gender, race, sexuality, and class come into play. Individual vs. collective, collaboration vs. competition, offense vs. defense, success vs. failure, inclusion vs. exclusion––when we become part of a team, we learn to negotiate a number of contrasting conditions. Teams rely on complex algorithms and alchemies and when properly designed, expertly trained, and wholeheartedly inspired, they are greater than the sum of their parts. This Salon explores the ways in which they can simultaneously function as mirrors of society and means to change it for the better. These are some of the questions we will ask: How does participation in required team sports affect a child’s development in both positive and negative ways? How do team sports reinforce societal and gendered norms? In what ways can they instead be used to challenge those norms? What does it mean to be a good team player, within and without sports? How do our experiences as a part of teams impact our subsequent social relations? Should we adopt a more team-centric outlook in our daily lives, prioritizing collective over individual goals? I've absolutely loved working on this report with the team at ASTN - Australian Sports Technologies Network. What an incredible group of women, and uncovering their inspiring stories has been a highlight the past few months! The sportstech space is growing rapidly, and the women leading the charge show exceptional leadership and resilience in a male-dominated industry. A few key takeaways from the report that stood out to me: ? Find mentors and allies that are willing to support and amplify the voices of women (regardless of gender). ? Empower women through education and advocacy - there is a need for targeted initiatives to help support skill development and promote leadership opportunities. ? Recognise the value of partnerships, mentorship programs and networking opportunities to nurture talent. ? Recognise and appreciate diverse cultural values, and norms to help break down the barriers. ? Trust in your own ability to challenge the status quo! ? Question traditional norms and push for change to foster more equitable and inclusive environments. ? Cultivate resilience and preserve despite obstacles.
