Most startups keep failing. Simply because they're hiring excessively. By definition, there's no specific size of a team meant to build a product, it can be made up of 1, 2, 4, or more persons. It's always best to try some of the tasks you'd want to outsource immediately, this helps you know what to ask an employee when you finally decide to hire. ? Massive hires leads to artificial tickets, and - they often lead to artificial results. also these tickets takes up real resources e.g database instances, etc. #startup #hiring #code #react

A few years ago, I helped a startup founder torn between hiring a developer for ?20,000 versus ?60,000. “Why pay ?60,000 when someone else can do it for ?20,000?” she asked. It’s a common question—especially when every rupee counts. This was a perfect example of the difference between price and value. Price is what you pay upfront; value is what you get in terms of quality, reliability, and long-term benefits. In this case, we chose the developer charging ?60,000 because it wasn’t just about the product it was about the expertise, scalability, and peace of mind. A cheaper option may have worked short-term but could have cost more down the road in bugs, wasted time, or even a complete rebuild. This experience taught the founder & me that sometimes paying more upfront provides lasting value and saves you from hidden costs. In business, always remember: price is what you pay, but value is what you truly get.

Startup hiring has definitely picked up. Few recent examples: *Yesterday I spoke with candidate who was talking with 6 startups. We added 3 to his mix. He's good SF-based fullstack engineer with multiple early startup experiences. Able to work in office up to 5-days/week which is big deal for SF. *I spoke with another candidate at the beginning of the week who wouldn't agree to move forward until she finished all her recruiter screens and could select where to proceed. Candidates would only do this if they're feeling overwhelmed and as a technique to manage activity. Also SF-based but more on the distributed systems side. *Last week we got a candidate two offers but lost him to a third. He was a great fullstack/backend engineer with recent experience as founder of an LLM dev tool startup. It's just really competitive right now.

As a startup, you want to search for professionals or senior people instead of junior ones for a reason. Startups need people who are immediately up to the task and as a junior dev, you want to have an environment where there's someone you can learn from otherwise you cannot grow. The same logic applies to data engineering; if you search as a junior, it's a good choice to apply to positions in "older" more settled companies. #dataengineer #understandingdata #programmerhumour #dataengineering
