Just a few types of surgeries account for a major share of all #opioid prescriptions. A handful of common surgical procedures account for large shares of all opioids dispensed after surgery in children and adults, according to two new studies. New research published in Pediatrics and JAMA Network Open highlights that a small number of procedures account for the majority of post-surgery opioid prescriptions for children and adults. For children ages 0-11, tonsillectomies and adenoidectomies alone account for 50% of opioids dispensed, while for those ages 12-21, tonsillectomies and knee arthroscopies each account for 13%. In adults ages 18-44, cesarean sections lead with 19%, followed by hysterectomies at 7%. For the 45-64 age group, orthopedic procedures dominate, making up 27% of prescriptions. “Our findings suggest that surgical opioid prescribing is highly concentrated among a small group of procedures. Efforts to ensure safe and appropriate surgical opioid prescribing should focus on these procedures,” says Kao-Ping Chua, assistant professor at the University of Michigan and lead author of the study in Pediatrics. The study involved developing an algorithm to analyze 1,082 major surgical procedures from December 1, 2020, through November 30, 2021. This new method revealed significant opportunities to reduce opioid prescriptions without compromising pain control, as many prescriptions were found to be larger than necessary. The research, funded by the National Institutes of Health and the National Institute on Drug Abuse, emphasizes the need for targeted efforts to optimize opioid prescribing practices following surgery. My #MotivationMonday starts with what gets me going everyday, my two sons. My oldest was born with a congenital heart defect called Truncus Arteriosus, requiring multiple surgeries and interventions over a lifetime. Bringing pediatric innovation to the forefront isn't just good business. For me, it's personal. I was fortunate to catch Kayleen Brown’s interview panel at DeviceTalks West 2023 discussing the unique complexities and challenges of #pediatric device development. When it comes to pediatric vision care, patients and their families may be left to wander across eye care “deserts” to find an ophthalmologist. Regions of the country where the health care needs of a population are not being addressed because of inadequate access to facilities or physicians are frequently identified as medical deserts, and they are proving to be a growing problem as the disproportionate geographical distribution of the health care workforce and services caring for patients comes into focus. A cross-sectional study, published recently in JAMA Ophthalmology, included pediatric ophthalmologists and pediatric optometrists and had results that found the geographic distribution of pediatric ophthalmologists and pediatric optometrists had a large amount of overlap. The study results also found that regions of the country lacking access to pediatric ophthalmologists or pediatric optometrists were in a lower-income demographic. Read More: https://ow.ly/HiYS50RspWV
