#Ireland’s housing crisis is so grave that employers are getting into the landlord business and buying property for their staff Ireland’s chronic housing deficit can be pinned on one thing: in the decade following the 2008 crash, building stalled. The lingering impact of the financial crisis resulted in a severe slowdown in construction activity, leaving a gaping hole in the housing market today. The shortfall has been so acute that some innovative employers are stepping in to provide solutions for their staff, taking an unprecedented step into the landlord business to ensure that their employees have a place to live. A recent feature by @Fortune highlights the depth of the issue, focusing on how companies like @Ryanair are buying properties to house their workforce. What does this mean for the future of housing in Ireland, and could this be a model for other companies facing similar challenges in high-demand housing markets? Employers that venture into the property market can secure housing for their employees, potentially fostering employee satisfaction and retention. In a landscape where affordable housing is scarce, this approach might not only be a lifeline for workers but also a strategic advantage for businesses looking to attract top talent. However, this trend also raises questions about the role of employers in the housing market and the broader socio-economic implications. Should businesses be responsible for housing their employees, or should this drive a stronger push for government and private sector collaboration to address the underlying issues? It's a complex scenario requiring multifaceted solutions. While some companies are stepping up to the challenge, long-term answers must involve robust policy changes, increased construction activity, and innovative housing solutions to ensure sustainable living conditions for everyone. For employers, housing can have a significant impact upon staff recruitment and retention. A lack of the right housing in the right place is thought to be presenting challenges for workers in the South of Scotland, and for organisations seeking to hire and retain the staff needed to deliver essential public services, maintain the region’s critical infrastructure, and sustain and grow the local economy. Anecdotally, there is clear evidence that these challenges exist, but the problem is not precisely understood. Dumfries and Galloway Council, Scottish Borders Council, South of Scotland Enterprise, Scottish Futures Trust and South of Scotland Community Housing have teamed up to investigate the need and demand for key worker housing in Dumfries & Galloway and Scottish Borders, assess the impacts of any housing shortages and identify potential solutions. It is especially important that we hear directly from employers and workers, including those who work in the region and those who wish to relocate there. We wish to know about any housing issues which you are experiencing, or expect to face in the future, and how they are affecting you and your family, colleagues, organisation and sector. Two online surveys have just been launched (links above) and will be open until ?? ???????? ???????????????? ????????. It should take you less than 10 minutes to complete the relevant survey. If you work in Scottish Borders, especially in the third sector, employ staff there or wish to relocate to the region for work, we encourage you to take part and help to define the need for worker housing in the South of Scotland! ?? #ScottishBordersHousing #WorkerHousing #CommunitySupport #KeyWorkerHousing #HousingSurvey #LocalEconomy
