Tesco Ireland has announced a strategic initiative to enhance sustainability in its logistics operations by introducing 50 biomethane-fueled trucks. This significant move, in partnership with DHL, will replace 50 diesel units and is expected to reduce tailpipe carbon emissions by up to 90%*. ? Key Business Highlights: ? Emission Reduction: Biomethane trucks will reduce carbon emissions by up to 90%*. ? Sustainability Goals: This initiative aligns with Tesco’s commitment to achieve net zero emissions by 2050. ? Operational Impact: The new trucks will support over 1,800 weekly journeys to 177 stores, ensuring efficient nationwide distribution from Dublin. ? Dear Alex - excellent report, makes for troubled reading. Conning the customer - Exactly who is the customer? Is the shopper at Tesco, or is it Tesco itself? Practically its the retailer - They specifically buy the product for onward sale - they have their own internal sustainability commitments etc. The individual shopper is the consumer. SO who should be the gate keeper of sustainable product on the shelf? the Retailer. FIPS - some good, mostly bad - its basically MSC light - to get access to markets - and with few exceptions a PR rather than an operational option, but it does create some really good funding opportunities for NGOs! The greening of stocks through "independent" assessment of industry lobbies - IF you want to know that actual status of stocks , read the commission report. Rounding on Thai Union. Essentially TU is the tip of the iceberg -90% of the bad stuff is underwater. It is like blaming the car manufacturers for climate change , when its in fact the oil companies that are doing the extraction. The Industry that exploits the tuna resource in unsustainable manner is the extractive industry - the catchers - they are killing the tuna, the sharks , the turtles the whale sharks the FADs etc.

My colleague, Stuart Henshaw, was at the National Food Recycling event yesterday. One of the main takeaways he noted was "90% of Local Authorities will need to purchase new vehicles to deal with the expected demand". The expected demand being a huge increase in the volume of food waste collected from circa 200,000 households being serviced currently to over 17 million by end of 2026. And, furthermore, their will be an increased demand from business (trade) sites. Companies like NTM-GB can supply the vehicles but how many vehicles will a council need, what size, and what days and hours of operation are required? That is where ISL and its route optimisation consultancy services can help. We have already started helping a few of the early adopter councils in planning new #foodwaste collection routes and fleets, and have seen a huge increase in inquiries recently. We will be running a number of in-person seminars and webinars throughout 2024 to help local authorities prepare. We’re spotlighting another signatory today: ALDI USA! Fighting #FoodWaste is part of their “Waste & Recovery” #sustainability focus area. Here are some of their #reduction strategies: -Piloting an organics recycling program in midwest stores that would divert food that could not be sold or donated to animal feed or compost, which helped them divert 37 tons of food from landfill. -Diverting 76% of operational waste across the company. ?? Well done to Ireland who yesterday launched its #depositreturnscheme , a promising step towards a more #sustainable future. The initiative encourages people to return empty beverage containers for a refundable deposit, targeting plastic pollution and promoting recycling. Hopefully this move will serve as an inspiration for neighbouring #Scotland and the wider UK, both grappling with environmental challenges. ?? Could Ireland's success catalyse a chain reaction, motivating other nations to adopt deposit return systems? ?? A collective effort in the UK would not only benefit the environment but also encourage responsible consumer behaviour. ?? Initiative makes refill affordable in South Africa In Alexandra, Johannesburg, a new grocery refill dispensary outlet has emerged to address waste challenges in informal settlements. Gcwalisa offers a unique solution by eliminating single-use plastics and containers through its refill process. Operating as a tuckshop, Gcwalisa follows a weigh-and-pay model, allowing customers to purchase items like 250g of mealie meal (course flour) for as little as R4 (￡0.17) or 250ml of cooking oil for R12 (￡0.52), provided they bring their own containers or purchase reusable jars from the store. This initiative aims to ensure affordability and reduce plastic usage in the community. Inspired by childhood experiences, the concept aims to disrupt the traditional retail model, which often encourages overconsumption.
