I recently had the profound pleasure of sitting down with Dr. Neal Baer, luminary in both the medical and entertainment fields, on the latest episode of the FUTUREPROOF. Podcast. Neal, whose groundbreaking work spans from 'ER' (and being the showrunner of Law & Order: SVU, which I *LOVE*) to addressing global health crises, dives deep into the ethical, societal, and scientific ramifications of CRISPR technology. In our conversation, we cover the incredible potential of gene editing to cure diseases and the daunting risks that accompany its power. From editing the human genome to the specter of designer pathogens, Neal provides an authoritative yet accessible exploration of CRISPR’s dual-edged impact. ?? Tune in to discover: - The critical importance of public discourse in shaping the future of gene editing. - Strategies to mitigate the misuse of this formidable technology. - The balance of innovation against ethical considerations in the pursuit of scientific advancement. As we stand at the crossroads of monumental scientific capabilities, Neal’s insights are more crucial than ever. Join us for a compelling dialogue on the future of medicine, ethics, and humanity itself. ?? Listen now https://lnkd.in/d5zw_NgN ?? What are your thoughts on the balance between innovation and ethical responsibility in science? Designing or identifying small molecules to target proteins of interest is just not a bottleneck in generating improved medicines. I’m a little disappointed that DeepMind’s CEO sees this as the next big thing to follow AlphaFold. I feel like there’s an irresistible slide from “protein structures!” to “drugs to target protein structure!” This logic completely disconnected from how new medicines are made. Will your AI generated compound insure success in a clinical trial? that’s the actual bottleneck. https://lnkd.in/eF3AnkpK

Biotech + Blue Ocean Strategy = Space medicine Came across a very exciting new biotech company - LinkGevity - which is essentially applying blue ocean strategy to biotech drug and target discovery. Instead of focusing on downstream pathways implicated in specific diseases, they try to identify upstream dysregulations that lead to multiple diseases and thereby break outside of the clutter of disease specific discovery programs. First proof of concept - necrosis* pathway: cellular stress that leads to organ damage (e.g. Acute Kidney Injury). Example of application: preserving kidney function in extended duration space travel (apparently it's not only cost and technology that limits our ability to go to Mars, but also human physical limitations - our kidney's won't last the trip). * Necrosis is typically viewed as a damaging, uncontrolled form of cell death that leads to inflammation and tissue injury, and it's generally less beneficial than other types of cell death, like apoptosis. While necrosis has some biological utility, its benefits are context-specific, typically aiding in emergency situations like infection or acute injury. In chronic conditions, persistent or excessive necrosis contributes to inflammation and tissue damage, making it a target for therapeutic intervention in age-related and inflammatory diseases. It continues to be a pleasure and privilege to speak with so many expectional scientists. Get your fix for relevance to glycobiology, Imaging, and even pharma in this episode with Christopher Taron. #omgomx #bruker #podcast
Imagine a diagnostic tool that can detect disease by reading your cells' hidden messages! It's not science fiction, it's the future of medicine thanks to glycobiology. In this episode of omg OMx #podcast, Kate Stumpo talks to Christopher Taron, an innovator in protein discovery, about the exciting potential of this field. What I learned as a non-scientist: ??4% of our proteins are linked to sugar molecules (glycans) that change with various conditions. ??These "cellular biosensors" offer a unique window for #earlydiseasedetection. ??#Glycobiology holds immense potential for revolutionizing diagnostics. Intrigued? Watch the full episode here: https://lnkd.in/ebX5h4K8 P.S. Share your thoughts on the future of glycobiology in the comments below!
