Across the country, including Oakland, districts and states are making bold shifts in both curriculum and teaching methods, grounded in the science of reading research. Now, three years into implementing evidence-based literacy practices, we’re seeing promising results, with steady gains reflected in OUSD schools’ and Lighthouse Charter Public Schools’ student growth data. These early indicators underscore the impact of strategic, evidence-aligned instruction on student reading progress. It’s important for policymakers to see and hear what this looks like on the ground, both the complexities and the successes. That’s why we invited local and state policymakers last week to join the Oakland Literacy Coalition, FULCRUM, and the California Early Literacy Coalition for school literacy?learning?walks?in Oakland, followed by a panel discussion. The panel discussion and visits to Korematsu Discovery Academy and Lighthouse Community Charter School highlighted several important lessons: 1. Effective Literacy Implementation Requires Skilled Leadership 2. A Systemic Approach Benefits All?Learners 3. Teacher Capacity-Building is Key Read more about the learning walks below -

Ever found yourself facing a room full of teachers, armed with a new curriculum, some shiny new resources, and a big mission, only to realize… this is gonna be harder than we thought? That’s exactly what Jill, a math coordinator from here in Ontario and her team experienced as they rolled out a workshop to help teachers rethink their approach to teaching math. There were successes—teachers were engaged, they saw sparks fly, they were engaged in great discussions, and you could even see that high school educators were rethinking their game plans.? But with success came new challenges, like keeping that momentum going and making those changes stick. It turns out, giving educators the tools, ideas and motivation is only half the battle; helping them adapt and actually use them effectively is a whole different ball game. And the secret that nobody told them was that for consistent implementation, follow up support makes up 90% of a successful adoption. Most of us in education are juggling the balance between too many new things at once and not enough structure to make them all work.? Teachers want guidance, but they also want the freedom to adapt to their own classrooms. That’s the fine line we’re walking here. That’s why you have to be committed to building a support system that isn’t just another list of tools but a roadmap to lasting change. Here’s what we did to help this district:? We took a hard look at how they were using their time and their structuring support. We asked tough questions.? What did we find? Read on here: https://lnkd.in/gPhJJBMY

At Abl, we work with school districts around the country to design schools and school schedules. Recently, we have been doing a lot of work on elementary schedule design. As part of the work, we evaluate district policies and procedures, examine how time is used across schools, and then partner with schools and districts to develop different scheduling scenarios that maximize their resources including staffing and time. One of the drivers for this work across the country has been the focus on the science of reading. As schools examine their instructional time and look at the key components of the school day and school year, it is important to consider the important building blocks that go inside the container of the school schedule. -Should you have extended literacy time? -Does extended literacy time enhance reading comprehension? -What percent of the school time should be spent on developing content knowledge in science, social studies, and the arts? -What percent of the school day/week should be spent on teaching reading comprehension? This research summary released today addresses many of these questions and more. Warning: A lot of the information in this summary brief may surprise you. As a teacher, I was taught things about reading comprehension that do not align with research on the science of reading. Check this new research summary out and reach out if you are interested in learning more about the work we do on school design and scenarios across the K-12 continuum. Your schedule is one of the most powerful tools at your disposal. Are you using this resource effectively? https://lnkd.in/gWtPpD6u

PRIMARY SCHOOLS | Thinking about joining Primary Teaching for Mastery in September? With testimonials like this, what are you waiting for?! What is involved? Two teachers from each participating school join a Work Group, consisting of around six local primary schools. Each Work Group is led by a trained Primary Mastery Specialist. Work Groups meet regularly to plan, observe and discuss teaching for mastery. In between meetings, teachers explore mastery approaches in their own classrooms and across their school. Support is provided from a local classroom-based Mastery Specialist who leads the group. This model of professional development involves hands-on learning and peer-to-peer support. It is evidence-based and designed to support substantial long-term change. Who can take part? This is for state-funded primary schools in England. Each school must send two teachers to half-termly school-based teacher research groups. Each term, the Mastery Specialist will visit each of the schools. In 2024/25, those teaching in special schools will have an enhanced offer that will enable them to network with other schools in a similar context. NB:?Schools can only take part in this particular Work Group once. However, there are other Work Groups dealing with teaching for mastery which are available in the year after a school is in a Development Work Group and beyond. Talk to your Maths Hub about your options. What is the cost? The Primary Teaching for Mastery Development Work Groups project is?fully funded?by the Maths Hubs Programme so is?free?to participating schools.
