Drones of all types are in rapid testing and production mode for reasons of safety, delivery, strategic surprise and speed. While airborne drones have caught the public imagination, underwater drones too have demand from various sectors of the economy. U.S. Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency (DARPA - the same organization that was at the forefront of the information revolution in 1968) plans to use underwater drones for long-range missions in the ocean. The prototype was designed and built by aerospace and defense company Northrop Grumman. This underwater (uncrewed) vehicle, which looks like an extra-large glider, will carry diverse payloads through the ocean depths, and is named after the famous Manta Ray (fish). The Manta Ray program was launched in 2020 by DARPA to ‘improve underwater vehicle design, including developing techniques to increase payload capacity and conserve energy.” https://buff.ly/3Wy7hv1 While the Manta Ray has several features that support “strategic surprise”, it also designed to cater to autonomy, modularity, and payload types. It can also hibernate in a low-power mode to save energy by anchoring itself to the seabed.
