Port of VA will be picking up more reefer cargo business by receiving 2 new vessel strings from Central & South America carriers CMA CGM & one. Hurray!! ?? More reefer containers will be diverted to the VA port. The stakes are rising rapidly on the containership charter market: as ships become scarcer, the list of operators at the table is also shrinking fast. Increasing numbers are having to leave, unable to meet the higher rates and commitments now being put before them. In a shift reminiscent of the turbo-charged days of 2021-22, Wednesday’s Howe Robinson Containership Index surged by 95 points to reach 1,628 points, its biggest weekly increase in over two years. According to this article in the Journal of Commerce, Ports America operator of the Seagirt Container Terminal in Baltimore, is working with CSX Transportation Intermodal and Norfolk Southern to work out a way to move Baltimore-bound containers diverted to NY/NJ and Norfolk (and, presumably, export containers moving the other way) via rail. If this can be put together, it would be a smart, customer-oriented move that could take quite a bit of pressure off the Baltimore drayage community and save shippers big $$$. https://lnkd.in/gnB6dqNi
