#InternalDisplacement presents a host of public health challenges, including increased vulnerability to infectious diseases. In Ethiopia’s Somali region, PATH partners with the U.S. President’s Malaria Initiative (PMI) to prevent #malaria outbreaks in humanitarian crisis zones. In April 2023, the PATH-implemented, PMI-funded Surveillance for Malaria Elimination Activity worked closely with Shabeley woreda health officials to facilitate the distribution of 500 long-lasting insecticide-treated nets. In total, 891 individuals have been protected from malaria infection. #RSV is the world's top cause of severe respiratory infections and hospitalization in young children—responsible for 1 in every 28 deaths occurring before six months of age. A new maternal vaccine and long-acting monoclonal antibody could help change that! Experts—including PATH's Clint Pecenka, Ranju Baral, and Jessica Fleming—explain in The Lancet. Every country should have the opportunity to choose which product best fits the needs of its population and its health system. Clinical signs alone do not detect all indicators of severe illness in children. In order for health workers to make the right diagnosis, they need access to and training for critical screening and #diagnostic tools. But in many countries, these devices are either not available, not functioning properly, or not suited for infants who need them most—putting children's lives at risk. Since 2019, the PATH-led Tools for Integrated Management of Childhood Illness (TIMCI) project has worked to improve access to #PulseOximeters and clinical decision support systems in Tanzania, India, Kenya, and Senegal. "Before the TIMCI project's interventions, it was incredibly difficult to detect #hypoxemia in very sick children upon arrival," recalls Joyce Nuhu, a clinical officer at the Nguvumali Health Center in Tanga, Tanzania. Since the introduction of the new tools, Joyce says, detection—and subsequent management or referral—has become much easier.
