OFF THE RECORD - STAY AT HOME SPOUSES It is more common than you know. Men had stay at home wives for decades. Today, we see many women with stay-at-home spouses (regardless of sex) when having a family. Speaking from the perspective of a full time working spouse, I get the decision. Stephan and I fought A LOT early in my career, especially when I would come home late. There was no way he would give up what he loved doing. Office FACE TIME meant everything in the 90’s and 2000’s. I never knew end times for my days. COVID changed a lot for flexibility to be at home, working around kid appointments, sick kids, doctors, and more. It even let us have pets. The article captures the stigma for men who stay home. Roles have changed and we need to be open to it and supportive. We also need to understand why it requires a spouse (male or female) to stay at home if children are involved. What makes certain jobs inflexibile to advancement with a family requiring a spouse to stay at home? What is wrong with the system? In Japan, I know many women who gave up children and sometimes even marriage for a career. What kinds of jobs are Hispanics concentrated in? Around 11% of Hispanic workers are in construction jobs, where non-U.S. citizens (green bars) dominate. Non-citizens also represent the largest share of the Hispanic labor force in farming and cleaning and maintenance jobs. U.S.-born Hispanics (yellow bars) are more concentrated in administrative, transportation, sales, and management occupations. Hispanic naturalized citizens (orange bars) have a moderate and relatively consistent representation across most occupations. For context, more than half of the Hispanic labor force is native-born, 16% are naturalized U.S. citizens, and 30% are non-citizens (including green card holders, visa holders, and undocumented immigrants). #HispanicHeritageMonth2024

Promotoras Launch First Coop in South County Multi-Service ECOS Is Born with Seven Immigrant Women Excellent Community Organizing and Services LLC (ECOS) was incorporated on April 2 and will open its doors for business following this public launch on Wednesday, June 26 at the offices of Human Agenda, with the support of a grant from the Office of Santa Clara County Supervisor Sylvia Arenas. The press conference will take place at noon at 1590 Oakland Road, Suite B211, San Jose, CA 95131. This unique worker-owned cooperative of immigrant women will offer community education, translation and interpretation in three languages (Spanish, Triqui, and English), home and office cleaning, and event-based childcare services. Most of the women are survivors of gender-based violence or human trafficking and have worked extensively as promotoras with Community Solutions in Gilroy and Morgan Hill, providing community education regarding domestic violence, human trafficking, and health issues. The seven worker-owners, incorporators and members of other cooperatives in Santa Clara County will be available for interviews at this novel and exclusive launch event The Workers Control the Business and Receive the Profit In this age of rapidly growing inequality and corporate decisions over which employees have no control, the democratic community wealth building model of ECOS LLC offers a refreshing alternative built upon internal democracy, equitable compensation, and an atmosphere of cooperation and caring. What’s wrong with this employment application form? The sentence highlighted in yellow, when translated to English asks “If you are a woman, do you plan to have children in the near future”. When posted on Reddit, users quickly pointed out that this question is illegal and cannot be asked. Others commented that there was no English translation for that question because the Sydney school knew they can’t ask such a question and urged the author of the post to report the school to the Fair Work Ombudsman (FWO). An employer cannot ask you if you are married, plan on having children, your age, your religion or what political party you vote for as it would be discriminatory. The Fair Work Act 2009 (Cth), lists the following protected attributes: ?? race ?? colour ?? sex ?? sexual orientation ?? age ?? physical or mental disability ?? marital status ?? family or carer's responsibilities ?? pregnancy ?? religion ?? political opinion ?? national extraction ?? social origin ?? breastfeeding ?? gender identity ?? intersex status ?? experiencing family and domestic violence. We believe that employment opportunities should be based on merit, skills, and experience—not on gender, ethnicity, or skin color. Quotas for "diversity, equity, and inclusion" (DEI) in local council recruitment undermine fairness and can lead to hiring decisions that don't prioritise the best candidate for the job. Today is Latina Equal Pay Day. As a Latina, it pains me that this day is so late in the year. "Latina Equal Pay Day is the approximate day Latina’s must work into the new year to make what White non-Hispanic (or Latino) man made at the end of the previous year. Latina’s typically earn only 55 cents for every dollar earned by white, non-Hispanic men and must work nearly 23 months to earn what white men earn in 12 months. Here are some things you can do instead of goose-stepping all your female folk into a boardroom to take a photo: - Check whether your job adverts are attracting only male candidates. There's a reason for that. - Get your creepy investor to stop telling the women in the office to smile more. - Start an equal pay audit. - Have an honest look at how promotions are awarded. - Deal with your golden child employee who has been reported for sexual harassment a million times. - Review your archaic parental leave policies. All these things are hard, potentially expensive, and uncomfortable. Taking some photos to post on your company page is infinitely easier. Do the hard thing.
