I’ll be speaking tomorrow about Victorhood: Mind Over Circumstance at two sessions for the CAYS Youth Success Conference at Oceanside High School. We’ll be talking about the impact of Adverse Childhood Experiences (ACEs), the negative ramifications of giving in to victim mentality, and the importance of adopting a philosophy of Victorhood in your life. The challenges we face shouldn’t be an excuse for why we fail but a compelling reason why we succeed. https://lnkd.in/gxXdSyAU

I spy with my little eye something familiar in this picture- front and center! I love seeing my book, Support and Retain Educators of Color, used in the context of pushing forward institutional change. I wrote this book not as a cute intellectual exercise but a how-to guide for education and organizational leaders to cultivate workplaces that affirm and retain educators of color. This Friday, I will be presenting insights from my book surrounding affinity group implementation at Center for Black Educator Development Black Men in Education Convening. See you there? #education #equity #BlackMenInEducationConvening #BMEC2024 #Blackteachersmatter

A few weeks back, I had the pleasure of witnessing and photographing a tradition at Westminster School called "The Lawn Ceremony". Essentially, the 12th graders invite the 11th graders to join them in a special area of campus exclusive to the graduating class. It's an honor to be personally led onto the lawn. It's part of the school's culture. And, often, it's an emotional moment for all. In the first five years of photographing this annual event, I didn't understand the reason for tears. They looked like happy tears, but I wasn't sure. This year, the head of the school, Elaine White, spoke succinctly at one of the closing ceremonies about the importance of community. And then it all made sense. From the first day of school to the last, schools such as Westminster have a broader mission than just education. They want to give their students a taste of what's possible in the "real world" –?that connection, cooperation, collaboration, and community are all achievable. The happy tears, I think, are evidence that despite the trials and tribulations of the past three years, they too can experience that same sense of togetherness as their older peers. It's perhaps also a reminder that they have just one more year to go before graduating from high school. If you are a part of a team, what traditions bring you together with your colleagues, and what is your mission? Drop a comment below. Follow my account and share this post, if you believe people in your organization would get something out of it. #cooperation #connection #collaboration #community

In a recent edition of Exchange Every Day dedicated to embracing families, communities, and culture, Monica Wells, our family and community program administrator, shared her deep connection to families and communities and how it positively impacts children's success. "Strong, authentic relationships between our families, students, and educators are key. We must speak life into our students, cheer them on, teach them the skills, and provide the tools they need to be prepared for the future. We must show examples of the power, importance, and necessity of community." Read more here: https://lnkd.in/gc7ur8uu
