She showed up and found him dead. He had heart failure, but was offered a surgery to implant a heart device to help prolong his life. What a gift…more time on this Earth hanging with the kids and grandkids. Another chance at life. She was there to check up on him after his surgery. She walked in and alarms were blaring…and it was too late. He was already gone. 19,000+ other people had the faulty device (known as HVAD) implanted PRIOR to the FDA recalling it. The surgery to remove it is so risky both Medtronic and the FDA advise against it. So it’s just left in place for 19,000+ people…all left wondering…will it stop working on me? Can you even imagine the amount of fear they face daily wondering this? Many patients have already died. And many patients have sued Medtronic, the creator of the faulty device and a company worth 107 billion. The home health nurse in this story that showed up to find her patient already gone happens to be one of our law nurses. And now years after her home health days are long behind her she’s running our latest project, HVAD. Our law nurses are reviewing tons of these cases, each one sadder than the previous. I want to live in a world where human lives are more important than a company’s profits; a world where patients, doctors, and nurses don’t have to question the safety of a device made specifically to prolong someone’s life. But until that world is created, myself and all my fellow law nurses will continue standing up to help those harmed. When the world has stopped caring, NURSES STILL CARE.

Take Charge Of Your Own Health! Spent a few hours in the hospital today for a review, and after the consultation, my doctor decided that a minor day surgery was needed.. After she explained the surgery procedure and told me that I’d be covered with 2weeks’ HL (hospital leave) post-surgery then asked me to go back and check which dates I could apply for a leave of absence from work before getting back to her with the proposed dates.. I simply told her that we could look at the scheduling right there and then, because I no longer need to go through any leave application, nor would I need the HL, since I ‘report’ to myself now!?? With that, we settled on the earliest date for this minor day surgery within the next 10min and I left the hospital feeling so good!?? It may sound strange to you, but it definitely felt great that I did not need to leave my health into the hands and approval of others anymore! I could take charge and was in full control of today’s situation, putting my own health first.. since I’m the one ‘approving’ this leave of absence myself now!?? Being my own boss and owning a business that’s portable and flexible also mean that I don’t have to worry about the ‘downtime’ needed to recover post-surgery, because I can work on my business anytime and anywhere, fitting it into my schedule and not the other way around!?? I love the kind of life I’m living now!?? #momslife #workingmumturnedstayhomemum #nolongerdeskbound #nomoreleaveapplication #noonetoreportto #momboss #mumpreneur #digitalbusinessownerandmenror #iamincharge #chooseday #healthiswealth #livethelifeyoulove #createyourdesiredlifestyle

??Why is a Nil By Mouth hospital wristband so important??? An increasing number of surgical operations are often delayed or cancelled due to the patient eating or drinking before surgery. The cancellation of any surgical procedure will often distress the patients who are already anxious about coming to theatre. The knock-on effect will cause delays and a loss of revenue to the hospital. It was a pleasure to work with Wayne on the concept and design of the NIL BY MOUTH wristband. We quickly finalised designs, materials and fastenings for this innovative product and put the whole thing into production. Have an idea for a product that could revolutionise patient safety? Positioning Injuries in the Operating Room can and do occur. ?? Teaching young nurses the importance of positioning can sometimes be a challenge as there are just so many things to remember. Here are some Dos and Don'ts of Supine Positioning. Nerve injury can occur if a patient is positioned improperly during surgery or remains in the same position for an extended period. Standard for Supine Positioning: ?? Extremities secured and supported on arm board at angle ≤ 90 degrees. ?? Palms facing up ?? Fingers extended ?? Head facing up Proper patient positioning and using positioning devices can help lower the risk of intraoperative brachial nerve injury. *Edit: thanks to a kind soul who privately messaged me… I was focusing on supine positioning —— but please note Trendelenberg and Reverse Trendelenberg are mixed up — and in actuality THE OPPOSITE… ?? Trend - Head Down ?? Reverse - Head Up ?? Email: [email protected] Limitless Legal Nurse Consulting Podcast ??? #medicalmalpractice #ORnurse #surgicalstandardsofcare

You need a nurse or doctor in the family. Anyone who has one knows it is REALLY useful. Here is an example: Your sister-in-law needs back surgery. She wants to know the best surgeon, and is even worried if she should have back surgery. So, you ask your brother, that is a nurse, about the best doctor in the area. He asks his colleagues who tell him where your sister-in-law should go. You pass this along, and she gets the care she needs. Can you see the scalability problem in this example? Not everyone has access to a brother that is a nurse or an aunt that is a doctor. So CareLuminate is democratizing this model. Here is what we did in Kansas City--getting the feedback of 478 nurses. https://lnkd.in/g-AdFMeN Once we have spread across the country, everyone will have this similar level of guidance. Brokers: You can help bring a study like this to your city at no cost. We are already working with brokers in Tampa, Portland OR, Philadelphia and Pittsburgh to make these studies happen. Large employers: You can help bring a study like this to your city, at no cost. See how at www.careluminate.com This is so simple. We can give every American the insights of your 'Brother Hank' or 'Aunt Isabel'. #fixinghealthcare #employeebenefits

It's interesting to observe a hospital process (or lack thereof) when a family member needs surgery, like this afternoon. We all arrived at the pre-op area, which doubles as the waiting room. The signage isn't completely clear, but we find our way. There's nobody sitting at the desk in the room to greet anybody. A sign says to call this phone number if you've been waiting for more than 15 minutes. After about 20 minutes, the family member calls that number. Shortly after, a nurse comes out and seems completely surprised that the patient had been sitting out here the whole time. These are solvable process problems. They can calculate how much they're saving by not paying somebody to sit at the desk. But what is the cost of the problems caused by that?? It seems like evidence of a "cost-cutting mindset" instead of a "process mindset" or a "patient-focused mindset." More than a decade ago, this health system was saying, "As a health?care?system committed to providing?patient-centered care, we want every patient to expect more..." Hmm.
