Why I Co-Founded Health Equities RPM: Bridging Gaps in Maternal and Infant Health Last night, as I attended the 106th annual dinner for the Urban League of Metropolitan Saint Louis, I was reminded of the profound community spirit that drives this entire region. The evening was not just a celebration of their achievements; for me, it was a reaffirmation of my commitment to health equity—a mission deeply personal to me. In my current role at the VA, I've been privileged to work on projects aimed at eliminating healthcare disparities, especially in underserved rural communities. However, the staggering statistics surrounding maternal and infant mortality rates in the U.S. compelled me to do more. Inspired by my late grandfather, who taught me the values of community and giving back through his actions, I co-founded Health Equities RPM to fight against health inequity. Health Equities RPM is not just another entity looking to navigate the complexities of healthcare alone. Instead, we aim to integrate our efforts into the fabric of existing initiatives, supporting and amplifying the incredible work already being done by organizations like the Urban League and many others around St. Louis. Our focus is on leveraging digital health innovations combined with culturally competent care models that are community-focused to enhance maternal and infant health and improve outcomes. Part of this vision involves empowering women to take charge of their health and that of their communities because nobody understands women’s needs better. Empowering women means giving them a voice and truly listening to them. I've met with numerous organizations willing to collaborate on this vital issue, and each conversation has been a reminder of the potential we have to make a significant impact together. Our approach is not to replace but to supplement, to add strength and innovation to the groundwork laid by those who have been champions of this cause long before us. I invite you to join this journey. If you share our vision of transforming maternal and infant health through collaboration and innovation, let’s connect. Together, we can ensure that every mother and child has the chance to thrive. Connect with us and let's make a difference together. The only way forward is a united front; silos and fragmented efforts don't work. #Collaboration #HealthEquity #MaternalHealth #InfantHealth #CommunityHealth #WomenInHealthcare #HealthcareInnovation #DigitalHealth #StLouis #STL #STLHealth #STLCommunity #STLStrong #StLouisProud #STLMade Raymond Alexander Sales, Sr., JD, LLM co-founder, mentor, and proud to call him friend.

Thanks to the The Hamilton Spectator for printing my Letter-to-the-Editor on April 13 re: Hamilton's decision to include community representatives on its Board of Health (re: April 3rd article, Another step toward ‘good place’ in Hamilton public health reform.) BROADEN WHO CAN BE ON HAMILTON'S BOARD OF HEALTH It is wonderful news that Hamilton city councillors have agreed to broaden the membership of the city’s board of health to include representatives of the community. Having worked for Toronto Public Health, which has been guided for many years by a board of health that includes community representatives, I can attest to the valuable perspective and advice that community representatives can bring to the table. However, I am concerned that the value of this representation will be diminished if council decides to limit membership to “regulated health professionals such as nurses and doctors” as proposed by Coun. Brad Clark. Health-care workers are trained to diagnose, manage and treat individual patients; they are not necessarily trained to manage population health. A robust body of evidence indicates that population health is impacted more by social and material circumstances such as income, housing, occupation, transportation, gender and ethnicity, than by lifestyle choices within the control of individuals. For this reason, it is essential for public health and the city to include people on the board of health who can provide perspectives, experience and expertise from and about populations within our community that may not be adequately reflected by councillors, staff or “regulated health professionals.”?We must address the needs of young single mothers, people who cannot find homes, newcomers from countries where there is conflict, adults who have health challenges that make it impossible to work, and older people living alone in their homes. In other words, we need perspectives, expertise, and experience that goes well beyond that of traditionally trained health professionals. I am a public health enthusiast that plays a vital role in promoting community health, advocating for policy changes, and responding to public health crises. I embody qualities that possess a clear vision for improving health outcomes in communities, anticipating future challenges and opportunities as a visionary thinker. I understand the needs and concerns of diverse populations, which is crucial for effective leadership in public health, as empathy fosters trust and collaboration. I uphold high standards because honesty is vital, and I also advocate for policies and practices that prioritize the well-being of the community. One of my core qualities is adaptability which is notable and highly praised by my predecessors. In the ever-evolving landscape of public health, I have encountered numerous challenges, including emerging health crises and fluctuating policies. I've learned that flexibility is critical; when faced with unexpected changes, I swiftly reassess strategies and regain focus on objectives. For instance, during a significant health initiative aimed at reducing childhood obesity in more deprived areas, we faced budgetary constraints. By seeking alternative funding sources and harnessing local partnerships, I effectively turned this challenge into an opportunity for greater community involvement. Throughout my career, I have honed my skills in excellent communication, both verbal and written, essential for conveying complex public health information clearly to various audiences and collaborating with various stakeholders, including government agencies, non-profits, healthcare providers, and community organizations are key to implementing effective public health strategies. My analytical skills are top-notch, as I am excellently able to analyze data and do research findings to inform decision-making, identify trends, and evaluate program effectiveness. I bring expertise in epidemiological knowledge which ensures an understanding of disease dynamics, epidemiological principles, and public health metrics fundamental for making informed decisions and policy development, competent in developing evidence-based policies that promote health equality and improve population health outcomes as well as project management including leading change events that entails planning skills, implementing, and evaluating public health programs ensuring that initiatives are successful and sustainable. I have successfully led various sustainable practices and interventions. My journey as a public health expert has been shaped by adaptability, clear communication, strategic planning, community engagement, and a commitment to ongoing growth. Each challenge I have faced has served to deepen my understanding of public health dynamics and the necessity of collaborative efforts. As I continue to navigate the complexities of this field, I remain steadfast in my mission to promote health equity and foster community resilience for a healthier future.

“With the pandemic, there’s been a greater emphasis on health equity and really addressing the root cause of health needs, which tend to be social,” our research and impact leader, Kelsey McNamara, shares with Marissa Plescia for MedCity News. “I think the past few years, everybody has really talked about social drivers of health and the impacts there. People started to do things about it, but the reality is people haven’t made much progress and there’s so much to do. So the fact that we’re seeing directives from regulatory bodies like CMS around health equity and #SDOH is really making it clear that this is an imperative for health plans that they need to invest in.” ?? At GroundGame Health and SameSky Health, we've learned that healthcare is not always equitable because of unaddressed health-related social needs that serve as barriers to achieving positive health outcomes, and we work tirelessly with our health plan and community-based partners to remove these barriers for members. But addressing SDOH needs can take many forms, and the city of Boston is taking some important steps to through its new #healthequity initiative. The groundbreaking $10 million initiative, supported by the Atrius Health Equity Foundation in partnership with the Boston Community Health Collaborative, aims to improve life expectancy and financial resilience in neighborhoods with poor outcomes across three leading causes of premature mortality. Organizations will collaborate to help at-risk residents meet basic needs, access financial support, and navigate complex healthcare and social support systems. This holistic approach addresses critical social determinants of health, including healthcare access, nutritious food, safe housing, and educational opportunities. We all have a vested interest in creating healthier, more resilient communities where everyone can lead healthy lives. We are eager to see the impact this transformative impact will bring! Did you know that about 60-80% of non-clinical factors impact a person's health outcomes? We know this is preaching to the choir for some, but for others, you might not be aware that the important work you and your organization do each and every day is critical to the health and wellness of your community. At IEHP Foundation, our work centers around health equity to ensure that our region becomes a beacon of Vibrant Health—meaning everyone has a fair chance to be as healthy as possible. It is crucial that we, as a community, make sure no one is at a disadvantage because of factors such as where they live, socioeconomic status, race, gender or background.
