With Women’s History Month coming to a close, it’s time to shine a light on the last Blue Cross and Blue Shield of Kansas women spotlight. This senior leader exemplifies the spirit of innovation, dedication and service to our members. Sunee Mickle, Vice President of Government and Community Relations, has been with Blue Cross and Blue Shield of Kansas (BCBSKS) since 2007 when she served as Director of Government Relations. In 2018, she was promoted to her current position. What does being a leader mean to you? Being a leader means that I must have the courage to step forward and represent others who may not be able to speak up for themselves. I always think about this as speaking up for our employees, our members, our providers, and other stakeholders in the community. I must do this with integrity and be willing to listen to others so I can understand their perspective. And most importantly, I believe it is important to admit when I am wrong. No one is perfect. And as a leader, it is my responsibility to reassess a situation so I can make sure that I am bringing value to others and our company. Why do you choose to work at BCBSKS? I chose to work at BCBSKS because of our company’s focus on improving the health of our communities. We are proud to stand up and do the right thing to help all Kansans have peace of mind and access to a better quality of life, and we do this without focusing on money and profits as the guidepost for our decisions. It’s refreshing to work at a company that puts people first. What doors have you knocked on or knocked down? When I think of which doors I have knocked down, my mind goes to knocking down all of the negative assumptions and beliefs others may have had about me throughout my career. It can be hard when people say hurtful things about your ability to succeed. And when this has happened to me in the past, I’ve knocked down any doubts and fear that those negative people tried to instill in me. When I first thought about attending law school, I was working in the pharmaceutical industry. There were leaders around me who thought that I didn’t have what it would take to become a lawyer, and some even said that I didn’t “look like” a lawyer. One person told me to my face that I would fail. But I didn’t let their negativity get the best of me. I channeled their negativity and used it to boost my energy. It was a challenge – game on! I used it to step up and work harder to prove that I can do anything that I put my mind to. I owe that to all the women who knocked down bigger barriers and doors before me.

Allyship – Doing Nothing is Never an Option I recently attended a powerful webinar with the Diversity Council of Australia (DCA) and Diversity Works NZ, exploring the true essence of allyship. I’ve always considered myself an ally, ready to support anyone facing marginalisation and prepared to take action when needed. This webinar, featuring a diverse panel of individuals from around the world, offered profound insights with a few challenges I thought I would share. There were moments of discomfort as we acknowledged privilege, power, and opportunities. But the key takeaway was clear: we should not hide from these advantages; we must actively use them to uplift others. The concept of?Tino rangatiratanga, a Māori principle of self-determination and empowerment, was highlighted. It reminded us that sometimes, advocacy isn’t what’s needed. Instead, we should ask ourselves: have we given others the chance to speak in their own voice? A poignant lesson came from Professor Peter J Anderson, who spoke about recognizing when an ally is not genuine. His words, “I see you; I see you every day,” resonated deeply, emphasizing the importance of authenticity in our actions. So, to all allies, I urge you: step aside, listen more than you speak, and make use of your privilege to create space for others.

Today, when you’re preparing your MLK corporate message or post, remember that you’re honoring a man who named it, who stood for civil disobedience as a form of non-violent social justice and civil rights for the most oppressed and the marginalized. He spent his life + legacy naming it. Over and over again. We have a responsibility to do the same - within the history and context of yesterday, but also within the legacy and context of today and tomorrow. As culture communicators, we must take the time to cut through the flowery language and get to impact: 1. How are we actively learning about how systems and structures perpetuate racism and inequities - as much as we study business principles and implement the next operating model? 2. How are we, as an organization, using our platform and power to use our sphere of influence for good? 3. How are we, as leaders, reflecting on our ability to create inclusive spaces for everyone? 4. What is our organization’s stance and impact on social issues that impact our people, their families, and our community? 5. How are we being held accountable to these things? How are we measuring progress? “Injustice anywhere is a threat to justice everywhere. We are caught in an inescapable network of mutuality, tied in a single garment of destiny. Whatever affects one directly, affects all indirectly.”

Being from Texas, celebrating Juneteenth has been a core memory for me, especially my childhood summers in East Texas. Since it has become a federal holiday, many companies have chosen to observe this holiday. I want to remind you that it is more than just another day off. Juneteenth is a day that marks not just a moment in history, but a journey towards freedom, equality, and justice. It reminds us of the continuous fight for rights, recognition, and real change in our societies and within ourselves. As leaders, we have the power to shape cultures that honor diversity, foster inclusiveness, and create spaces where everyone feels valued and heard.
