In Georgia did you know: ATLANTA — A growing number of kids in Georgia are dying by suicide, according to data released by the Georgia Bureau of Investigation. According to preliminary data from the Georgia Department of Public Health, 118 children and teens, between the ages of 10 and 19, took their own lives in 2021. It’s now the second leading cause of death among kids ages 10 to 14. Become an advocate to help prevent suicide. Donate, walk, tell your story, spread the word and pray! Following The Jordan Legacy's well-attended webinar, 'One Voice, One Hope,' on September 23rd, we have now reviewed chat transcripts, post-event online surveys and individual conversations with others operating in the suicide prevention space. ?? What was the outcome of the early feedback? An overwhelming desire for something new and different to be created, which would enable people to come together, as a community, to network, feel supported and to be able to work collaboratively on initiatives to prevent suicides. During the webinar it was noticeable that the event wasn't attended by any of the 'big charities' and that a large proportion of those who joined the session were grassroots organisations and smaller charities, CIC's etc. Many who fed back felt they don't always get a seat at the more familiar suicide prevention tables and their voices are either not heard or not acknowledged. There were also a number of comments about the competitive nature of suicide prevention in the UK. ? One Voice, One Hope envisions a diverse community of those wanting to reduce the annual number of suicides in the UK, which would work alongside the bigger charities and the government but transcend these bodies by creating a movement not previously experienced in suicide prevention within the UK. It would align with and be supportive of other important organisations like Baton of Hope UK, Chasing the Stigma, Speak Their Name CIC and others. In Ireland, we tragically see approximately 500 deaths by suicide each year, with 80% of these deaths being male and 20% female. Additionally, around 14,000 cases of self-harm are presented to hospitals nationwide every year. While awareness around suicide prevention has undoubtedly grown, and fundraising efforts have increased—Pieta House's donations doubled to €11.2 million in 2021—the sad truth is that the statistics surrounding suicide and self-harm remain alarmingly stagnant. So why, despite the millions raised and countless awareness campaigns, do these numbers stay the same? Because we’re not changing how we do things. Every year, we raise awareness, we gather the statistics, we fundraise, we walk, we hold coffee mornings—but the numbers don’t shift. We need more than awareness; we need action. It’s time to make suicide prevention a priority in every community. This is where?Bray Lifeline?will bridge the gap. Our goal is to train as many local volunteers as possible in Mental Health & Suicide First Aid, creating Ireland's first community-based Suicide First Responder team. These volunteers will work with existing local groups to ensure every part of our community has someone trained in Suicide First Aid. Imagine this: In May, our community of Bray, Co. Wicklow, raised over €66,000 for Pieta House during the Darkness Into Light event—a truly phenomenal achievement. But what if everyone who participated in that walk was trained in Suicide First Aid? Just think of how many lives could be saved, how many instances of self-harm could be prevented. This is the vision of Bray Lifeline—to have someone trained in suicide prevention in every household. World Suicide Prevention Day (WSPD) on September 10th, is an opportunity for all sectors of our communities including charitable organisations, researchers, clinicians, practitioners, politicians and policymakers, volunteers, those bereaved by suicide, those with lived experience and individuals to start the conversation on suicide prevention. The triennial theme for WSPD 2024-2026 is ‘Changing the Narrative on Suicide’ with an associated call to action ‘Start the Conversation’. While it is crucial to discuss suicide prevention year-round, WSPD should be recognised as a single day offering the opportunity to highlight the issue and acknowledge our efforts to prevention suicide and honour loved ones in a specific and meaningful way. Planning events with clear objectives and a thoughtful approach can significantly enhance their positive impact.
