Today begins Black History Month, which is observed each February. It is an opportunity for Americans to learn more about their country’s history, which, unfortunately, is often overlooked and forgotten. As they say, “Black history is American history,” and it is a rich and diverse history. A great nation honors its past and learns from it. A great nation doesn’t forget its past. It doesn’t let the most significant facts about our collective and shared history slip away into the abyss of forgotten history. The things that happened in the past shape and inform where we’re headed in the future. It’s essential that we set aside a month each year for learning as much about Black history as possible.

Happy Black History Month! When I was in school, we began preparing for Black History Month in January. When you came to school ??, all the halls were lined with Black history figures. We had presentations ??, plays, projects and all these things that schools don't do anymore. Black history IS American history. ????? It is a part of our history, despite the fact that a lot of people aren't choosing to teach it anymore. It's very important that we celebrate this month, so all month we'll be sharing the many accomplishments and contributions of African Americans across U.S. history. Also in celebration of Black History Month, I’ll be going live everyday starting tomorrow to share interesting facts about Black inventors and inventions that we use every day so we can clearly see that Black History is American history ???? Here are some things you maybe didn't know: ?? One of America’s earliest almanacs and the country’s first natively produced clock was invented by Benjamin Banneker, an African-American mathematician, naturalist, astronomer and almanac author. ?? Automatic elevator doors were invented in 1887 by Alexander Miles, an African-American inventor and businessman. Like, share and comment to extend the reach! Everybody needs to know this.

Today is the first day of Black History Month, lets celebrate the history and culture. This year’s Black History Month theme, “Reclaiming Narratives,” marks a significant shift towards recognising and correcting the narratives of Black history and culture. By emphasising this theme, we shine a brighter light on stories, allegories, and histories that underscore our commitment to correcting historical inaccuracies and showcasing the untold success stories and the full complexity of Black heritage. #blackhistorymonth #blackhistory #reclaimingnarratives #blackheritage

There are stories in black history that have been shared and celebrated for generations, but there's immense value in elevating the lesser known stories. When students hear untold stories, we equip them with the tools to question, analyze, and challenge the status quo. That's when real impact happens. Follow along today as we share some untold stories in black history.

As Black History month comes to a close (why is it just a month, anyway?), it has me reflecting on what a scary time we live in. What's scary is that even more history is being erased with this refusal to allow critical race theory to be taught, the denial that slavery was the cause of the Civil War, and with certain politicians saying that Black people benefitted from slavery (taught skills and work ethic?!?!) Once again, history is being whitewashed, and that is a very dangerous place for us to be. What do you think are ways we can fight against this blatant racism? (There is so much more to racism than erasing history-we have real systemic issues.) How do we fight against books being banned? (I personally want to go on a book-shopping spree and buy all of them!) In this vein, it is unfortunate we need Black History Month, CRT, and DEI at all. Wouldn't it be nice that instead of erasing history, we all accept and love one another and live in peace?! It starts with educating and modeling for our children. After all, they learn what they live and then they live what they have learned. See below for more info about DEI and continue to do your important work with DEI, Roxie J. Patton! Overheard someone the other day at a restaurant say, “Why do ‘they’ need Black History Month? Isn’t that just history? Like why is their history special?” The point was right there and yet light years away. In #DEI work, the work is not to “assist” or “save” marginalized people, but to remove the barriers put into place that prevent them from being seen, celebrated, and supported. Black History is American History, but because of the systemic barriers that Black Americans have faced, many of their accomplishments and experiences were removed from the history books. #BlackHistoryMonth gives us all chance to learn more about that erasure and to advocate that Black History be more incorporated into history curriculum, thus removing the barrier.

?? Closing Black History Month: Reflecting on Marty Meehan's Words ?? As Black History Month draws to a close, let us carry forward the wisdom of Marty Meehan's words and continue our journey of reflection, celebration, and action. "Black History Month must be more than just a month of remembrance; it should be a tribute to our history and reminder of the work that lies in the months and years ahead." - Marty Meehan In these powerful words, Meehan reminds us that the legacy of Black history extends far beyond a mere month of recognition—it is a living testament to resilience, courage, and triumph over adversity. Black History Month serves as a vital opportunity to honor the contributions, struggles, and achievements of Black individuals throughout history. As we bid farewell to this month of commemoration, let us not forget that our commitment to equality and justice knows no bounds. The work of honoring Black history and advocating for equity continues every day, in every moment, and in every action we take. May we carry the spirit of Black History Month with us throughout the months and years ahead, striving to create a future where every voice is heard, every story is valued, and every individual is empowered to thrive. ???? #BlackHistoryMonth #MartyMeehan #Reflection #ContinuedAction
