Advice to my younger professional self: Network before you need it. I spent almost 5 years on a huge team with lots of internal resources. I got comfortable, and didn’t think about how small I let my work world become until it was time to make a move. Feel familiar? This year I’ve been playing catch up by: ? Reaching out to new contacts doing similar or related work to see if they’d like to meet for coffee or on Zoom (shocker – most reply and say yes!) ? Seeking out and attending industry events virtually and in St. Louis (two upcoming ones linked below) ? Taking advantage of free networks like The Nonprofit Hive – you pick a time, they pair you up! ? Joining and participating in professional groups like Consultants for Good (C4G) What other ideas am I missing?? Financial literacy, media literacy, and fundamental tech skills tend to be overlooked when it comes to K through 12 classrooms but are essential in modern life. I taught myself these skills through the internet because when I was young there wasn't formal or structured learning available. It shouldn't require an instinctive entrepreneurial bent these days to be immersed in these opportunities. It should be part of how we teach our kids along with reading, writing and arithmetic. Last week, I was thrilled to present at the NGO-federatie and 11.11.11 event alongside Nicola Banks, the co-founder of One World Together. We aimed to share how this organisation is transforming the way we at Play it Forward approach social impact. Here are the key takeaways from our presentation: The Community Space: This platform is a game-changer, breaking down barriers between funders and the projects they support. It allows donors to connect directly with our work, witness its impact, and become part of the conversation. This shared experience fosters co-creation and a deeper understanding of the issues we're addressing. Thoughtful Project Design: Predictable funding through One World Together has revolutionized how we design our projects. We can take a patient approach, engaging with diverse stakeholders, community members, and experts within the Community Space. This collaborative process ensures we choose the right partners and reduces assumptions, increasing the likelihood of success. Small Amounts, Big Impact: One World Together's consistent funding, even in smaller amounts, has significantly impacted our organization. For instance, it's enabled us to offer better salaries and stability to our coaches, empowering them to fully dedicate themselves to community work. The event sparked a lively discussion, with insightful questions from the audience about the potential for dependency in unrestricted funding models. We emphasized the importance of a supportive culture and environment within partner organizations, as well as a thoughtful selection process for new partners. Overall, it was an inspiring and educational afternoon, reaffirming the power of One World Together's innovative approach to create meaningful, sustainable change.
