But this year’s Finals were more than just a win for New York—they were a victory for all of women’s sports, with record-breaking attendance and viewership. This WNBA (Women's National Basketball Association) season saw a spike in support from the start but ended on an even higher note with a peak of 3.3 million viewers watching game 5, despite airing alongside Sunday Night Football and the final game of the Major League Baseball NLCS. The WNBA Finals set an attendance record for the league, averaging 18,518 fans per game, with the biggest crowd coming in at 19,521 attendees. “Look what can happen when you have an intention, and you put resources, care, and attention to it.” said Clara Wu Tsai, co-owner of the Liberty. According to Neilsen, the NCAA women's championship game was the most-watched basketball game - AT ANY LEVEL - since 2019! As a former college athlete and female advocate, I am thrilled to see women's accomplishments finally getting the viewership they deserve. To be fair, women have been breaking records for years and now we are finally seeing the recognition we deserve. As a mother of two determined young girls, I am excited to see what the future holds for them. Other points: ?? The ratings of the IOWA vs South Carolina game hit 24.1M viewers in the last 14 mins of the game, and surpassed the men's final game by over 4M viewers. ?? The final game had more viewers than every World Series game since Game 7 of the 2019 World Series and every NBA Finals game since Game 5 of the 2017 NBA Finals. ?? Before the championship game, the Hawkeyes broke 3 other viewership records. ?? Caitlin Clark has a NIL valuation of $3.1M and Angel Reese of LSU at $1.8M. ?? South Carolina had an undefeated record of 38-0 and is now apart of a elite group of 10 women’s teams to ever be able to do that. ??It truly takes a team to win a championship, even if you have a GOAT on the opposing team. These wins are propelling us into a new era in women's sports....WATCH OUT, here we COME! #WomensSports #BreakingRecords #NCAABasketball #futureisfemale

They blew it out of the water this year. Last Friday, with over 14 million average viewers, the Iowa vs UConn women's Final Four-game averaged more viewers than (per Joe Pompliano*): ? Any women's CBB game ever ? All 2023 NBA Finals games ??All 2023 World Series games ? The 2023 Orange Bowl ? The 2023 Big Ten Championship ? The 2023 Cotton Bowl ? The 2023 Pac-12 Championship ? The 2023 Big-12 Championship ? The 2023 ACC Championship ? The 2023 Peach Bowl ? The 2023 Masters Final Round ? All tennis grand slam finals (men's & women's) ? All 2023 CFB regular season games except one Only to be surpassed by Sunday's Championship game between Iowa and South Carolina which drew... 18.7 million viewers ?? The game also peaked at 24 million viewers and was the most watched basketball game — men's or women's, college or pro — in five years. Pretty insane considering that weight room video was only only 3 years ago... IYKYK. But the question remains. With superstars such as Angel Reece, Caitlin Clark, Kamilla Cardoso and Paige Bueckers taking their talents to the WNBA, will women's college basketball continue to trend upward? Without a doubt and here's why... 1) There is a conscious effort to increase viewership and awareness now more than ever before 2) There is now more investment and infrastructure, including funding, facilities and support 3) There are plenty of players who have high and very lucrative NIL profiles which gives additional exposure and visibility to the sport 4) There are several real deal hoopers who are next in line None of this is an anomaly. It's the start of a new era in women's sports. And major shoutout to Dawn Staley and the South Carolina Gamecocks ???? #ncaa #marchmadness #sportsbusiness

NCAA Women’s Basketball Championship Beat Men’s Game In Ratings For First Time Ever ? The men’s basketball NCAA National Championship increased its viewership over last year’s final game—but fell short of the women’s championship for the first time ever, after failing to draw in the record-breaking viewership the women’s matchup saw on Sunday. ? https://lnkd.in/es7KKnTC ? The recent landmark moment where the NCAA women’s basketball championship surpassed the men's game in ratings for the first time ever is a vivid demonstration of change and growth. This shift isn't just about sports; it symbolizes the broader potential for growth in areas traditionally underestimated or overlooked. The achievement showcases the importance of recognizing and valuing diverse talents and markets. It’s a call to action for leaders in every sector to invest in and nurture underrepresented areas, understanding that with the right support and visibility, they can achieve unprecedented success and reshape the landscape of their fields. ? #calabrese #consulting Jenn Calabrese Calabrese Consulting LLC

Trust The(ir) Process. Sixteen years after they microwaved their way to an NBA Championship via a major roster overhaul, the Boston Celtics slow cooked and simmered the 2024 Championship. In 2008, the Celtics traded for Kevin Garnett and Ray Allen, moving their young core for big-named players. It paid off in an immediate NBA Finals and two Finals appearances in three years. This time, en route to the 2024 title, the Celtics year-by-year tweaked and fine-tuned their roster to go from eight-year contenders to champs. The Celtics' path to victory underscores the power of process, dedication, and unwavering faith in their method. From smart drafting to making difficult and fan-frowned on decisions, they've exemplified sustainability in their approach—a stark contrast to how much of the post-Heatles NBA builds, drafts, and moves. Reflecting on their achievement, it's clear they've built a foundation worth emulating. Their commitment to long-term success and resilience is a testament to the enduring values of sportsmanship and strategic planning. Here’s to trusting the process—both on the hardwood and in the boardroom. Let’s draw inspiration from the Celtics' journey as we navigate our own paths to success. #linkedinsports

The Women's Professional Baseball League (WPBL) may launch in 2026 as a six-team circuit for female players. If and when it debuts, it will be the first professional league for women since the All-American Girls Professional Baseball League— the one shown in “A League of Their Own”—dissolved in 1954. Heightened interest in women's sports in recent years made this an ideal time to launch a women's baseball league, said co-founder Justine Siegal, the first woman to coach for an MLB team with the Oakland Athletics in 2015. The consulting firm Deloitte estimated that women's sports will generate a billion dollars in global revenue in 2024 for the first time because of skyrocketing popularity and marketing deals. The WNBA had its most-watched regular season in 24 years, thanks primarily to its star rookie class led by Caitlin Clark and Angel Reese. The inaugural season of the Professional Women’s Hockey League brought in record crowds. The WPBL will hold a scouting camp in spring 2025, with a draft in the last quarter of the year. The WPBL will launch with six teams, though Stein estimated that could later increase to eight. The teams will be confined to northeast cities in 2026 so that they can travel by bus to compete. https://lnkd.in/gFmegJQu

12.3 million viewers for LSU-Iowa showdown?is pure economics My recent blog about Women's Professional Hockey League has a tongue-in-cheek title including (...Boom! 45 years later, PWHL) regarding my small bit for women's sports back in late 70s. The PWHL has six teams to start in 2024, nothing fancy like team logos, but as PWHL advisory board member Stan Kasten said, "The visibility offered across our broadcast and streaming schedule is unprecedented in women’s hockey, and reinforces the growing interest in our sport. Accessibility of PWHL games throughout our inaugural season is a giant win for fans everywhere." That 12.3M viewers (according to SportsTVRatings) - even brother Steve tuned in - for this dramatic replay of last years championship is more than just a hmmm moment. Not as monumental as the political aspect of multiple states voting to keep abortion services available of course, but a very, very strong, even undeniable fact, and advertisers follow the crowd. Those Olympic and World Champion titles by the US Women's soccer team finally earned a real TV contract for the NWSL - a four-year U.S. media rights deal worth?$240 million - 40x higher than the league's previous agreement with CBS. USWNT has *always* produced better than the USMNT (mens) team - many will recall the call for parity of compensation before most recent women's World Cup. The WNBA, established 1996, has been a possibility for the college stars that developed from college-international sources unavailable before that. Many teams around the world have women's teams beside their original men's sides, and taken together, these?are legitimate examples of women's sports as Economic Truth. Last year's LSU-Iowa final rated a 9.9M viewer audience; the 12.3M beats *every NBA game last year,* except Game 5 of the Finals - and every MLB game! TV $$$ follows the eyeballs, and elevates the economic power of any team or individual situations that promise significant payoff. There was lots of demand for tennis beyond the majors when McEnroe was a presence, right? You can still see individual tournaments if you spring for a cable tier, but the sun doesn't shine as brightly on that sport now. No Agassi, Federer, Serena, or Nadal, less eyes/$$$? Majors get paid equally. Caitlin Clark (Iowa), Angel Reese (LSU), UConn (11 national titles) are what we want from our sports heroes/heroines. Clark's three point bombs 'from the logo' will inspire a generation (so coaches, beware). Young girls with Huskie headgear, or asking for Rapinoe's number (15) or Clark's (22), that's REAL. So is TV cash. Just in case you wondered how small my contribution was... https://lnkd.in/e5k_UVXu

In a world where basketball stars are racking up frequent flyer miles overseas to keep their wallets healthy, Unrivaled is stepping up to bring them a much-needed reprieve. And guess who just signed on to this brand-new, fast-paced league? Brittney Griner, the Phoenix Mercury’s fearless force and shot-blocking maestro, is officially “Unrivaled.” Who’s next? Probably the rest of the WNBA’s royalty at this point! The Unrivaled league, a three-on-three extravaganza spearheaded by Breanna Stewart and Napheesa Collier, kicks off this January during the WNBA’s offseason. It’s practically a royal decree for hoop stars who’d rather not pack up for Russia or Turkey just to pay their bills. Imagine the energy of a three-on-three game where Griner, Angel Reese, and Breanna Stewart go head-to-head. That’s Unrivaled’s vision: a star-studded, homegrown hoops fest that’s finally making offseason life a little easier (and a lot less jet-lagged) for players. As the 24th player to join the roster, Griner is adding her name to a lineup that already reads like an all-star menu. Alongside her are heavyweights like the Chicago Sky’s Angel Reese, Seattle Storm’s three-point queen Jewell Loyd, and the Las Vegas Aces’ power trio—Kelsey Plum, Chelsea Gray, and Jackie Young. But let’s not ignore the money shift happening in women’s hoops. Thanks to a groundbreaking $200 million-a-year WNBA media rights deal, basketball in the U.S. is finally paying players what they’re worth—at least, closer to it. It’s about time, too, as more and more fans tune into games and make their way to the stands. Griner’s move to Unrivaled only underlines the league’s appeal, especially for fans who’ve recently fallen for the lightning-paced three-on-three style showcased in the Summer Olympics. And for those die-hard fans? Stewart and Collier are practically throwing a party for them—one where they don’t need passports to cheer on their favorite stars.
