With 579 landfill gas (LFG) systems currently in operation across the country—and more going into operation soon—the LFG sector is experiencing strong growth in 2024! ?? Why? Because key players in the landfill and RNG sectors are pursuing ambitious growth strategies to ensure more landfill biogas is recovered. This largely means developing RNG platforms at existing electricity-producing LFG facilities, or at landfills which previously only flared. RNG Projects Hit Targets in First Half of 2024 The renewable natural gas (RNG) sector is showing solid progress as we close out the first half of 2024. Major companies express confidence in their projects, indicating a positive trend. BP's Archaea Energy successfully brought online four new RNG plants, with plans for four more in the third quarter, positioning them ahead in the biofuels market. Other industry players like WM and Republic Services plan to launch five new projects each by the end of 2024. GFL aims for two to three more projects, despite Waste Connections facing delays due to utility interconnections. The pricing environment remains favorable with stable D3 RINs, encouraging investment. The industry is cautiously optimistic about the minimal impact of the Supreme Court's Chevron doctrine decision on the Renewable Fuel Standards program.
