I had a great conversation with Jeremy Smith today, connecting with how we, as educators, have been given a powerful tool to give back to our communities. I am excited about our partnership with the Freedom Scholar Learning Center in Rochester, NY, to implement 30 of our permaculture kits for the students participating in their afterschool programming this fall of 2024. Mr. Smith has shown incredible dedication to supporting his Rochester community where the majority of families rely on free or reduced lunch programs and many parents work 2-3 jobs to make ends meet. His commitment to providing educational opportunities in such a challenging environment is truly inspiring.

Kids are our future...and our future workforce! We know children who have high-quality, early childhood education will go to kindergarten socially, emotionally, and academically ready and will have a higher chance of being successful throughout school and going on to enter our workforce ready to succeed. That’s what we all want for kids in our community! Last year, 1,133 local kids were enrolled in high-quality, early education, thanks to people like you who give. This is just one of the ways your gifts make a difference! Those kids now have a better chance of succeeding in school…and in life. That’s the power of community. https://bit.ly/3VXQ4uG

Introducing Learning for Justice's newest series - Growing Together: For Children and Families. When we cultivate the values of justice, equity, diversity and inclusion in young children, we create steppingstones toward resisting hate and strengthening democracy. We offer three new learning journeys in this series, along with a new page for reviews of children’s books and a collection of our Story Corner stories. These resources recognize that parents and caregivers play a powerful role in determining what children learn and in shaping children’s perspectives and our shared future. Educators can also use these resources in schools. We will continue to add new learning journeys. #education, #socialjustice, #parenting

Through the two-generation approach, children in the Learning Community Center in North Omaha increased social-emotional skills, approaching or exceeding the national average in all areas. WHY THIS MATTERS: A child's social-emotional development provides a foundation for learning from elementary school to the workforce. When young children develop positive relationships at home and in school, they feel more secure in learning and building relationships.

I have been thinking a lot about the term 'quality'. We throw this term around without really defining what it means and looks like. What makes a quality child care program? Is it the size of the space, how it is set up, ratios, programming, and staff training? How much of what we deem quality is actually adults telling children what to do, where to go, how to play... all following regulations set up by more adults in the name of cost-effectiveness. To me, the regulated square footage we stuff children into both inside and outside is too small! There is no room for moving, spreading out or taking time on their own away from others. The ratios that are regulated are too high! These rations don't consider a child having a rough time and needing that extra 1-1 time. Children come to us with needs and we should be able to spend time supporting those children that need us! How much of our programming is created based off of the school system? Sitting down to learn through rote learning and colouring sheets. This is not what our training should be telling us about how children learn best. When will we start to consider the children's needs in what we define as quality? . #reflection?#reflectivepractice?#qualitycare?#earlyyearseducation?#earlyyearscurriculum?#whatisquality?#playmatters?#qualitymatters?#handsonlearning?#advocacy?#earlychildhoodeducation?#earlychildhoodeducator?#childrennaturally

Did you know 1 in 5 Americans attend school in rural communities? This brief highlights how rural communities collaborate with local businesses, community groups, and tribal nations to build summer learning opportunities for young children. Some examples include: - The Cherokee Nation funds summer academic programming and provides enrichment activities taught by tribal elders - Firefighters and other community members help students explore different career pathways - A school district partnered with a company to teach children video game design, coding, and LEGO robotics Learn more about how community partnerships strengthen summer learning in rural districts in this brief – and you can find more quick research snapshots in the Research Connections library: https://buff.ly/40jxxdT!

How do we create a meaningful summer program for children? It begins by sitting down with your children and exploring what they would like to learn during the summer break. This is a great time to initiate hobbies that may last a lifetime. Investigate local programming. Are camps available that compliment their interests? It is important that children have structure no matter what the time of year. It gives them a sense of security and emotional safety and well-being. Please plan a family service project also. So many organizations need your help. Please let go of the academics and include them into fun and exploring. Camps away are also excellent for creating independence and self-assurance. Much self-confidence and esteem may be gained with these explorations. #summercamp #socialemotionallearning; #emotionalinteeligence; #earlychildhoodeducation #eqforkids

By organizing programs by condition group we begin to foster community for our campers and their families. Campers build independence, can share and ask questions about common experiences, and make friends with kids who are just like them. Here's a look at the impact of intentional programming: https://bit.ly/3D8YswE
