Yay, I've finally closed my friends and family round ?? After many discussions with my nearest and dearest I've managed to raise a grand total of ￡53.72!!! In all seriousness, following on from this year's IWD theme, Investing in Women, more action has to happen so that underrepresented founders in this space are supported. Not all founders have family. Not all founders have a family they speak to. Not all founders have family with any disposable income. Not all founders have friends and if they did they probably lost most of them due to building a startup! Not all founders went to university. Not all founders have had a corporate career. Not all founders have a network. The current investment landscape is broken and I don't have the answers to fix it. But what I do know is with or without investment, despite the disparities a lot of women build amazing businesses. Something Cindy Gallop wrote the other day really resonated with me and my own journey so far "white men get funded on potential. White women get funded on proof, and not often even then, and black women and people, and women of colour don't even get funded." I've experienced sexism and misogyny and repeatedly get told I need more traction. Despite a 22 year nursing career and generating revenue from paid proof of concepts it's not enough. Yet I see male counterparts in the same space, with no clinical background, no revenue, get money pumped into their startups. It sounds like sour grapes and it's really not. What it is, is tiredness and exhaustion from continuously fighting. It's anger from the lack of; transparency, honesty, equality, equity, and I could go on. One thing's for sure, despite all of this, I continue to build my business with my knowledge and experience and the knowing that I have the ability to execute on my plans, make lots of money and all due to impact and change. Adversity is not new to me and it is a fuel for disruption and success, so keep watching this space ?? Following our post from last week, we will be highlighting an investment trend for females in 2024. Each week for the next 3 weeks we will discuss an area of the current market for female investors and founders. This week: Female-Led Top Returns: Female founders tend to exit their business faster for 2x the return, while female investors, though only 20% of total private investors, make up 70% of top quartile of returns. Diverse-led companies (including women and minorities) also tend to return capital of around 30% higher than their non-diverse peers. Behind the Numbers: Often the reason females succeed in such high proportions is that they set the bar higher - they have a healthy chip on their shoulder and know they need to outcompete their male peers for the same recognition. However, they don’t necessarily work more as they tend to be more efficient with their time. They also tend to keep costs lower, driving up profit margins. Summing it Up: We support female founders both for equity and return reasons. It is a double whammy of positive benefit to support diverse entrepreneurs. We noticed that less than 50% of our clients were female That got us thinking - Why? And our research told us: ? The startup ecosystem doesn’t have many female founders. How We Built it: → Spoke to our female clientele to understand the problems they faced → Provided multiple solutions in brainstorming sessions and piloted it with a few. ? ? I'm bored of attending events with "an aim to increase diversity and inclusion" and "bridge the gap between investors and female founders" that all look like the below, AI generated, image. (Note: There's a reason this AI came up with a room full of women that all look the same!) ?? I'm tired of the same people consistently preaching to the choir about funding female entrepreneurs. Female entrepreneurs know we need investment, we know we need diverse teams, and we know we are a statistically good bet. We don't need to be told - repeatedly! ?? Don't get me wrong, we NEED all these brilliant initiatives like HER FUND Project The Case for Her investHER-UK Found Diverse (to name but a few).... ?? AND we also seriously need initiatives spearheaded by male allies, where they take action to educate and inform other men, who are not yet knowledgeable about this or who are still holding on to their unconscious bias, bringing them into the allyship. ?? Antler wants to back more female founders. Recent news (or not news to many) shows that VCs are not investing in women, despite outperforming male-only founding teams across key metrics. My mother is a successful female founder, and I have seen firsthand the dedication and perseverance she had in building a truly innovative organisation. She is one of the most intelligent and hardworking people I know, and right now, the ecosystem is missing out on more founders like her.
