Samantha Kedroski, a speech pathologist at Northwestern Medicine Central DuPage Hospital typically infuses creativity, joy and play into the treatment plans she creates for her pediatric patients. But for one patient, she has taken this philosophy of care to another level. Maddy was diagnosed with a stutter at age 4 and has been working with Samantha for the past several years. Maddy and Samantha see each other twice a month and have formed a special bond. Samantha has taken engaging approaches to Maddy’s treatment, including: ? Accompanying Maddy on stage at a talent show; Kedroski played the ukulele while Maddy sang a Taylor Swift song ? Writing a book together about stuttering ? Helping Maddy’s family with the application process for a specialized summer camp called Camp Shout Out in Michigan that hosts youth who have a stutter and then working there as an instructor for a week to further support Maddy and cheer her on "Camp Shout Out was an incredible experience for me as a clinician, and what I learned from the faculty and leaders there will only help me better serve my patients moving forward,” says Samantha. “It was made even more special by the chance I was given to watch Maddy flourish. Her confidence as a communicator and as a young person came out in vivid colors. Samantha’s clinical expertise, warm energy and dedication have had a significant impact on Maddy’s life. “For us and many other parents whose children get care at Northwestern Medicine, seeing this type of growth in our children is groundbreaking,” says Kristina. “I received a video of my child singing in front of a crowd at camp. Can you imagine? I wouldn't be comfortable doing that myself. Yet there she was, confidently singing on stage.” #NMBetter
