We’re #GoodShepherdProud to share that the Good Shepherd Rehabilitation Drexel University Pediatric Physical Therapy Residency program has received a 10-year re-accreditation from the American Board of Physical Therapy Residency & Fellowship Education (ABPTRFE). Our residency program provides a resident physical therapist (PT) with expert, hands-on mentorship at inpatient acute rehabilitation, outpatient and Early Intervention, and mentored observation at the NICU and school-based settings. Accreditation by ABPTRFE, which will last through September 2034, is a reliable indicator of the value and quality of our residency program. Medical play is so much more than just play—it’s a window into a child’s emotions, thoughts, and coping strategies during challenging medical experiences. Child life specialists use their expertise to assess and track a variety of behaviors during medical play to ensure every child feels safe, understood, and empowered. Here’s what you might not realize are many of the things we are observing during medical play: ??Which item the child grabs first to play with and why it might feel the most familiar or safe. ??What items the child avoids entirely and how that may reflect fears or uncertainties. ??The language they use when describing and using each item, providing insight into their understanding and feelings about medical procedures. ???How they handle the items when using them on others, revealing their perceptions of caregiving and control. ????Whether they freely explore the materials or appear hesitant, which helps us gauge their comfort and readiness. ??If dolls or stuffed animals display fear or discomfort, showing us specific worries the child might be projecting. Medical play isn’t just for fun—it’s a therapeutic tool that helps children understand, process, and gain confidence in medical settings. These sessions can be pivotal in supporting children during: 1. Procedure preparation (e.g., learning about an IV, MRI, or surgery). 2. Addressing needle phobia or anxiety about medical tools. 3. Education about a new diagnosis in a way they can understand. 4.Processing past medical trauma and building resilience for future experiences.
