The Rapid Growth of Renewable Natural Gas (RNG): A 400% Surge in Five Years Renewable natural gas (RNG) is emerging as a transformative energy source with the potential to drive sustainability and reduce greenhouse gas emissions. RNG provides a practical, low-carbon alternative to traditional natural gas derived from organic waste at landfills, livestock farms, wastewater treatment plants, and food production facilities. According to McKinsey, RNG is making waves in the energy sector, growing by an astonishing 400 percent between 2018 and 2023. This exponential rise is a critical step toward decarbonizing America’s economy. To contextualize, the solar industry, often celebrated for its growth, expanded capacity by 205 percent in the same period. RNG’s 400 percent growth is attributed to its seamless integration with the U.S.’s 2.6 million miles of natural gas pipelines. This could dramatically reduce the noise levels during the installation of monopile foundations, further mitigating potential impacts on marine mammals and other marine life. Today, Ontario’s Minister of Energy and Electrification, Stephen Lecce asked the Independent Electricity System Operator (IESO) to develop a local generation program for smaller scale, distribution-connected generation, including biogas! The Minister has asked the IESO to report back on the proposal to establish the program to secure existing and new facilities by April 2025, and launch the program by early 2026.?This is great news for the biogas sector as we look to continue supporting Ontario’s electricity needs!
