The Rapid Growth of Renewable Natural Gas (RNG): A 400% Surge in Five Years Renewable natural gas (RNG) is emerging as a transformative energy source with the potential to drive sustainability and reduce greenhouse gas emissions. RNG provides a practical, low-carbon alternative to traditional natural gas derived from organic waste at landfills, livestock farms, wastewater treatment plants, and food production facilities. According to McKinsey, RNG is making waves in the energy sector, growing by an astonishing 400 percent between 2018 and 2023. This exponential rise is a critical step toward decarbonizing America’s economy. To contextualize, the solar industry, often celebrated for its growth, expanded capacity by 205 percent in the same period. RNG’s 400 percent growth is attributed to its seamless integration with the U.S.’s 2.6 million miles of natural gas pipelines.
