The United States Air Force is developing a fleet of more than 1,000 autonomously operated drones, and later this spring its top civilian leader plans to climb into one of those?artificial intelligence-operated?warplanes and let it take him airborne. The service has been tight-lipped on what the fleet of drones will look like in size or platform, whether they will be full-size warplanes or something smaller. It is expected a F-16 test flight will be used this summer. Drone aircraft could augment the service’s ability to breach defenses, and they are envisioned to provide support in a variety of future missions such as surveillance or jamming. sophisticated air, sea and underwater drones to target U.S. bases and commercial ships in the Red Sea or against China. UK-based Horizon Technologies announced a GBP 3.7 Million contract for BlackFish airborne SIGINT systems for a Middle East government customer. Horizon Technologies’ BlackFish technology (which geolocates and monitors L-band emitters such as SatPhones) is the key to Horizon’s Multi-Domain Amber ISR Network Products. Horizon Technologies’ ISR technology is embedded as an ISR Node on manned aircraft (rotary and fixed wing), UAVs, ships, terrestrial ground stations (AmberPersistent), and in space, on LEO (Low Earth Orbit) Amber SIGINT satellites. “Our business continues to expand, and we are now selling our cutting-edge products into the FiveEyes community. Thanks to the generous support of the UK Space Agency, our Amber-2 (Phoenix Mission) satellite will be launched in early 2025, and several customers are already buying complementary AmberPersistent stations for persistent 24/7 SIGINT collection”, said Horizon Technologies’ CEO John Beckner. POLARIS prepares for Spaceplane Aerial Refueling Flight Experiments When making use of aerial refueling, the operational range of the Aurora spaceplane greatly increases, which enables to execute space launch or hypersonic missions far away from the home base. In addition, the payload mass can be increased. The experiments also include in-flight docking between a spaceplane demonstrator and another aircraft representing a tanker during the year 2024. While the focus is on conventional kerosene aerial refueling, a subtask will also investigate the possibility of future liquid oxygen (LOX) aerial refueling. The experiments are supported by the BAAINBw (Federal Office of Bundeswehr Equipment, Information Technology and In-Service Support).

Cleared for Supersonic Flight Boom Supersonic XB-1 has secured a Special #Flight Authorisation (SFA) to Exceed #Mach 1 from the FAA. XB-1 test #flights will continue to be conducted in the R-2508, complex & #supersonic operations will occur in the Black Mountain Supersonic Corridor & in a portion of the High Altitude Supersonic Corridor within the R-2515 #airspace, which has been used extensively for #research & #military supersonic #aeronautical operations. XB-1’s SFA follows a thorough review & environmental assessment, it also extends to the chase #aircraft, which will trail XB-1 to observe, monitor & record the #safety of flight. Chase #planes accompany new aircraft to observe how the test plane is handling & verify things like #altitude, airspeed, & #airworthiness during flight. Now that XB-1 has successfully completed its first flight & received authorisation to fly supersonic, the team will systematically expand the flight envelope to confirm its performance & handling qualities through & beyond Mach 1. This includes in-flight checks of all systems, as well as multiple test points demonstrating safe margin to flutter (vibration) boundaries. Nevertheless, there are still a total of 10 to 20 flights planned before reaching the magical speed. The first flight of XB-1 marked the return of a civil supersonic aircraft to the #skies 20 years after Concorde’s retirement. Hypersonic flight, characterized by speeds from Mach 5 to Mach 25, is revolutionizing aerospace engineering and could redefine global trade and travel. Key Approaches to Hypersonic Flight: 1. Hypersonic Glide Vehicles (HGVs):These vehicles are initially boosted into the atmosphere using solid rocket boosters and then glide at hypersonic speeds. HGVs are primarily seen as replacements for Intermediate-Range Ballistic Missiles (IRBMs) and Intercontinental Ballistic Missiles (ICBMs), offering enhanced speed and maneuverability. 2. Hypersonic Cruise Missiles: Unlike traditional missiles, hypersonic cruise missiles maintain high speeds while following a near-horizontal trajectory, skimming the sea or hugging the ground. This design allows them to navigate complex terrains at hypersonic speeds. 3. Hypersonic Space Planes: Several startups in the USA are pioneering advancements in hypersonic aircraft: - Venus Aerospace (founded 2020) is developing hypersonic drones and passenger aircraft, and recently tested its Rotating Detonation Rocket Engine with storable liquid fuel. - Velontra (founded 2021) is working on an unmanned spaceplane that combines jet engines with air-breathing propulsion, aiming to launch satellites from space. - Radian Aerospace (founded 2016) is developing the Radian One, a delta-winged spaceplane designed for manned missions and launched from a rocket-powered sled.
