With the 21st-century space race underway, I've found myself fascinated with all things space, from past to present. One of the reasons I'm so fascinated by space is because it puts your mind in a place where you can start to think about where we live with a different perspective—zoomed out. Did you know we have a global Outer Space Treaty signed into law 50 years ago? The treaty lays out some basic rules for space exploration like: ?? Outer space shall be free for exploration and use by all States. ?? Outer space is not subject to national appropriation by claim of sovereignty, use or occupation, or any other means. ?? States shall not place nuclear weapons or other weapons of mass destruction in orbit or on celestial bodies or station them in outer space in any other manner. ?? The Moon and other celestial bodies shall be used exclusively for peaceful purposes. Wouldn't it be cool if the Outer Space Treaty applied to Earth? As Yuri Gagarin said when orbiting Earth in the first human spaceflight: "Orbiting Earth in the spaceship, I saw how beautiful our planet is. Lunar Railguns: From Military Tech to Space Resource Utilisation ? The future of space exploration and resource utilization may get a boost from an unexpected source: military technology. Electromagnetic railguns, originally developed for naval warfare, could be the key to unlocking lunar resources and fuelling the New Space economy. ? Recent research, including a report by General Atomics Electromagnetic Systems to the U.S. Air Force Office of Scientific Research, highlights the potential of adapting electromagnetic launch systems for lunar use. While visionaries like Gerard O'Neill proposed similar ideas decades ago, today's technology brings us closer than ever to making it a reality. ? The U.S. Navy's Gerald R. Ford aircraft carrier already employs an ElectroMagnetic Aircraft Launch System (EMALS) for take-offs. This proven technology could form the foundation for a lunar launcher capable of hurling resources into orbit at the required speed of 1.68 kilometres per second. This is approximately Mach 5 (on Earth), and there have already been demonstrations of Mach 7 railguns, showcasing the technology's potential. ? Why is this important? The Moon harbours valuable resources like silicon, titanium, aluminium, iron, and water. Launching these materials into lunar orbit could dramatically reduce the cost of space missions and enable in-space manufacturing. ? An electromagnetic lunar launcher would leverage abundant solar energy, making it a sustainable and cost-effective solution. The challenge now is to adapt the technology, achieving lower mass to meet the specific needs of lunar launches. ? This dual-use technology exemplifies how innovations from one sector can revolutionize another. As we look to establish a permanent human presence beyond Earth, repurposing military advancements for peaceful space exploration could be the catalyst that propels us into a new era of space development and resource utilization. ? Nuclear power offers significant advantages in space exploration. As a self-contained and power-dense solution, a Micro-Reactor can provide power for the exploration of a planetary surface, or power and propulsion for spacecraft. After some review of current spacecraft and the International Space Station and a lot of math... My conclusion is that several Northrop Grumman's Cygnus Spacecraft loaded with only fuel, and no cargo, could boost the ISS to a much higher "Parking Orbit" where it could continued to be used for its primary functions and also be used to construct larger spaceships. Other roles could also be added such as the ISS being used for emergency supplies and fuel storage for Moon and Mars mission spacecraft. It is a much better option than spending 1 Billion plus to plunge the ISS into the Pacific Ocean. Asking America and the World: Would it be better to save the ISS or dump it into the Ocean? The Space Development Agency (SDA) and Missile Defense Agency (MDA) announced the upcoming launch of six satellites into low-Earth orbit from the Space Launch Complex 40 at Cape Canaveral Space Force Station, Florida. Today’s planned launch will include two satellites for MDA’s Hypersonic and Ballistic Tracking Space Sensor (HBTSS) and the final four SDA Tranche 0 (T0) Tracking Layer satellites of its Proliferated Warfighter Space Architecture (#PWSA). The SpaceX Falcon 9 rocket, as part of the National Security Space Launch program, will deliver the satellites to their prescribed orbits. ??The Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency (DARPA) and the defence contractor Northrop Grumman have signed a contract to develop a conceptual lunar railroad. Northrop Grumman is one of the 14 companies selected to participate in the US "Lunar-10" project, aimed at exploring the pathways to a thriving lunar economy by 2035. America is convinced that services such as energy and communication could be established on the Moon. As for the new contract, the plan is to establish a network of lunar railroads to transport people, resources, and supplies across the satellite. ??The United States is particularly interested in the lunar South Pole, which is considered a region of potential resources. ??In February, the American company Intuitive Machines even sent its robot, Odysseus, to the satellite. ??While it initially successfully reached the Moon, it toppled over after sustaining damage during landing.
