As we near the end of “Pink October”, we want to remind everyone that Breast Cancer awareness doesn’t stop on October 31st. Every month is Breast Cancer Awareness month. As a company, we have become more familiar with the impact of many forms of Cancer - in the last three years alone - than we ever thought possible. If you’re reading this post, chances are, cancer has touched your life in some fashion as well. So take a moment and give recognition to those who have fought and those who continue to fight.?

As Breast Cancer Awareness month comes to an end, I have been reflecting on a conversation I had with someone recovering from breast cancer.? It is difficult to talk about the emotional and physical toll cancer can have, but she highlighted her desire for everyone to understand the need for early detection.? ? Most breast cancers are self-detected.? Finding it in its earliest stages, when it is often easier to treat, is key to successful outcomes.? It’s essential we all follow the recommendations for self-examination and screening.? ? At work, we are deeply committed to raising awareness, signposting resources, and creating safe spaces to have, what can often be difficult conversations. October is Breast Cancer Awareness month and October 15th is Global Lobular Breast Cancer Awareness Day. Why? To shine a spotlight on the 15% of breast cancer diagnoses each year that are lobular, about 1 in every 7 diagnoses. Lobular Breast Cancer is the 2nd most common type of breast cancer with over 46,000 women diagnosed each year in the US, but it receives less than 1% of breast cancer research funding and has no specific treatment. It is a distinct type of breast cancer that may not form a lump, so is often missed on mammograms and diagnosed later when tumors are larger, which may result in less favorable prognoses. It is a month to educate, reflect, and take action against breast cancer. 1 out of 8 women in the United States will be diagnosed with breast cancer during their lifetime. As a daughter of a breast cancer survivor, I fully stand behind the statement “early detection is key”. My mom’s earlier diagnosis made the difference in her overall prognosis and treatment plan and for that I am thankful.
