?? Science and technology policy: it’s everywhere! ?But who works in S&T policy? ??♀? Where do they live and who do they work for? ?? What do they do all day, and what motivates them? ?? How do they see the field changing, and where might it be going? ? ?? To celebrate its 40th year, Issues in Science and Technology conducted a survey to find out more about this community. Katherine Santos and I had the privilege of analyzing the results. ? ??Nearly 800 people responded to the survey ??Respondents hailed from 40 different countries and all continents except Antarctica ??All ages and career stages responded ??A wide range of sectors were represented ? ?? Fascinating overview of those working in science policy!

This is an informative article on how Virginia is helping boost the workforce in high demand occupations. I am very excited for the research and data to be released on VA’s initiatives mentioned in the article. One thing I thought of while reading the article is how there are so many other federal and state dollars that could be pooled together to grow and advance the outcomes these initiatives are already seeing. Wraparound services was mentioned as being something these initiatives do not fund; however, those of us who have worked in workforce development (in any way) know that these services are vital to student success. This is where local workforce solutions and Boards come in, just to mention two other organizations that could fill these gaps. There are so many wonderful resources and financial opportunities to fuel the workforce and help people gain skills. We just need to figure out how to draw them all together to maximize each dollar to reach more people to help. I didn’t even mention what could happen if we pulled in private dollars too. ??

Please join the Center for Ocean Leadership (COL) for a virtual forum on “Fostering a Diverse and Inclusive Ocean Workforce.” The Center for Ocean Leadership (COL) is hosting a virtual forum on May 9th from 3-5pm ET/noon-2pm PT, and will focus on “Fostering a Diverse and Inclusive Ocean Workforce.”?The goal of this forum is to bring together the ocean science, education, and technology community to determine the following: What are the needs for the ocean workforce in different sectors? What are the barriers to meeting these needs for students of different backgrounds and circumstances? What are possible solutions to overcome these barriers in an inclusive and equitable way,?creating stronger pathways for career development and advancement for individuals from diverse backgrounds? We will address these questions through moderated discussion and break-out groups. The break-out groups will be designed to encourage communication and collaboration across different sectors (education, non-profit, commercial). The COL team will then develop a written document synthesizing the forum input into a set of shared talking points, which will be open for comment from the forum participants. The final document will be distributed to the entire community to use in their efforts to communicate with program managers and policy makers. As the workforce ages, supporting older workers isn’t just important—it’s essential. Without it, we risk losing invaluable expertise. An inclusive workplace benefits everyone. So, how do we ensure older adults continue to grow and thrive in this evolving labor landscape? The Stanford Center on Longevity in collaboration with CASBS at Stanford has launched their #FuturesProject on Education and Learning for Longer Lives to answer that very question. The new initiative brings together leaders from industry, VC, government, academic, and nonprofit sectors, including The SCAN Foundation’s own VP of Innovation and Investments, Anika Heavener. Over the next year, she and the other Future Fellows will carry this ethos forward as they work to shape a national vision that not only prioritizes vocational dignity but also explores innovative ways to leverage the valuable insights gained from combining lived and professional experiences.
