I spent a good chunk of time researching, setting up, and rolling out Karpenter (https://karpenter.sh/), as a replacement for Cluster Autoscaler to handle Node Scaling in EKS Clusters. Karpenter is a pretty cool project with lots of perks, and when We got it up and running, it successfully decrease around 20% of the total EC2 spendings. We just came across the following in a customer AWS Cost and Usage Report (CUR): ——— line_item_operation | line_item_usage_type RunInstances:0002 | BoxUsage ——— For those who don't "speak CUR" ?? (it's a dark art), an unqualified usage type of "BoxUsage" without a specified instance type or region prefix is the OG m1.small EC2 instance type that launched in 2006. Who needs region and instance type qualifiers when you only have one instance type in a single region?!? Can't believe one of these is still running 18 years later! ?? My how far things have come since then.
