What happened to civility on campus? Where is that being taught? In this week's episode, we looked at free speech on campus with Greg Lukianoff, CEO of Foundation for Individual Rights and Expression. Greg tells us about the types of speech that are not protected and why a high bar is needed in order to protect speech. As Lukianoff explains, there are certain categories of speech that are not protected under the First Amendment, such as true threats, intimidation, and discriminatory harassment. These exceptions are based on the principle that speech that directly causes harm or targets individuals based on protected characteristics can be legally punished. However, Lukianoff also emphasizes that these exceptions must be narrowly and carefully defined to avoid infringing on legitimate free speech rights. The bar for what constitutes unprotected speech should be high, he argues, to prevent the abuse of these exceptions to silence unpopular or controversial opinions. This is a critical point in the campus free speech debate. While we must take seriously the need to prevent harm and protect marginalized communities, we must also be vigilant against the misuse of speech restrictions to stifle open inquiry and debate. Two #degrowth activists & scholars have written an open letter calling for working class, global South and other under-represented voices to be better supported by the movement, and to shift away from the current state of affairs where white, academically-educated and global North voices garner a disproportionate amount of attention. The letter is open for anyone to sign in support of this message, and everyone is invited to do so: "There is increasing frustration among degrowth activists that the general trend of the degrowth movement remains heavily European-centered, and overly academic. Thousands of degrowth activists struggle in the shadows of capitalism to contribute to the movement, while having to make ends meet on little income, or no income whatsoever. Recognition for effort remains strongly coupled with academic status, seniority or popularity. In a true egalitarian movement, merit and status would have no place, and would be recognized for what they really are: delusional creations of society." https://lnkd.in/ecdDfQbV

Sir Geoff Mulgan recently shared an article on collective stupidity. It is an interesting construct in the polarized social and political times that we are living in. I am interested to dive more deeply into teams (and teams of teams) that are making bold decisions, which may be creating more fracture in our communities. I don’t see this example as a one off. I am seeing more such examples every day in the public and private sphere - including some of my own long held business relationships. As a Christian, I understand and value the Ten Commandments. As a parent, I don’t see how Ten Commandments will change our schools for the better - particularly when those same schools are struggling every day to live by their 3-4 core values (which are already inscribed on walls and T shirts). This move risks damaging inclusivity and engagement. Why are teams biting off more than they can chew, at the same time as creating unhealthy conflict? What can we do that may generate more healthy debate and collective intelligence?
