Amber Chancellor, FNP-BC, has joined the Family Clinic of Starkville. A board-certified nurse practitioner, Chancellor earned her master’s degree in nursing from Mississippi University for Women in Columbus. The mother of three says she found her calling later in life. “I chose a career in health care because of personal hardships, and experiences in my own life that made me want to help others when in need,” Chancellor said. “I wanted to make a difference by providing compassionate, non-judgmental care for those that truly need it.” Family Clinic of Starkville committed to providing medical services for the entire family, welcoming new patients and walk-ins with same-day access. Amber joins Drs. Steven Brandon and Emily Landrum. For more information or to schedule an appointment, please call (662) 323-3162 or 1-800-THE DESK (1-800-843-3375). Clinical nurse specialists are trained to conduct needs analyses that can bring new healthcare programs to those who need them. ?? The setting: Franklin County, Virginia. ?? The problem: During her CNS training, Phyllis Whitehead initiated and conducted an assessment that revealed that dying and severely ill residents did not have access to hospice care. ?? The solution: After graduation, Phyllis collaborated with the local hospital and home health service to found the Hospice of Franklin County program. Initially she was the only staff member, but over the years it has grown and continues to serve the community with over 15 staff caring for seriously ill patients and their families. ?? Why it worked: As a CNS, Phyllis’ skills embrace patient care, but go far beyond to encompass research and program development. Only a CNS could successfully make the case to stakeholders and marshall the resources needed to create the program quickly and efficiently. ?? Outcomes: Now called Carilion Hospice Services Franklin, the facility has cared for over 6,000 patients and brought in over $60 million in revenue. Are you considering or preparing to move a loved one into Memory Care? We know that this can be a challenging and emotional time. So, we asked the experts for some advice. Here are some tips from a local nursing director who oversees a Memory Care Unit: 1) Present a united front: moving a family member into Memory Care involves the whole family. Prior to move in, agree on a "script" as to why your loved one is moving and stick with it. It is important create a sense of calm when making the transition. 2) Keep is simple: when speaking to your loved one about a move, minimize overwhelming details. For example, "we are moving to your new home," or "let's make some new friends." To our family members and caregivers, please lean on your new care team and take care of yourself as well. Change can be difficult for everyone. 3) Pack in private: when preparing for the move, it may be best not to pack in front of the resident. Seeing their things packed up could trigger anxiety and frustration. Find times when they are away from home to pack and set up the new room/apartment in advance of the move if at all possible. You know your loved one best, but we hope the above information provides some guidance. Good luck and please let us know if we can serve as a resource.
