On January 29th, as the NC General Assembly kicked off the 2025 long session, lawmakers and association members from across the state gathered for the annual AENC Legislative Reception. It was quite a busy night for NCOS leadership, as they caught up with and had great conversations with Sen. Ralph Hise, Rep. John Bell, Rep. Tim Reeder, MD, Rep. Jarrod Lowery, Rep. Charlie Miller, and Attorney General Jeff Jackson. NCOS looks forward to continuing to build upon these and many more relationships with our lawmakers. We thank them for all they do for the citizens of North Carolina. NCOS Representation Included: Dr. Sean Smolenyak - President, Dr. Joanna Reiman - President-Elect, Dr. Rasika Whitesell - Secretary-Treasurer, Dr. Jeff Sterling - Immediate Past President, Dr. Jamie Casper - Legislative Chair, Dr. Will Sawyer - State Affairs Trustee, Dr. Kenny Bumgarner, and Alyssa Barkley - Executive Director.

When organizations you belong to offer you an opportunity to be featured in their communications material, lean into it! Being highlighted by others is free-ish publicity that allows you to borrow credibility and show how connected you are to a particular community. If you need help figuring out how to leverage your current memberships (or how to engage your members!) Kelchen Consulting is here for you.
The State Bar of Wisconsin’s Nonresident Lawyers Division is putting together a fun cookbook that highlights the diversity and “flavor” of our membership. This week, my very own “Hamburger Help Me!” dish was featured! If you are an NRLD member, I’d love to shoot you the submission link so you can participate too.

I want to express my gratitude to Megan Quattlebaum for her incredible leadership of the CSG Justice Center over the past seven years. Thanks to her efforts, our organization is stronger and more resilient than ever before. We’ve taken on major new initiatives like Justice Counts, Reentry 2030, and the Expanding First Response Commission, and I’m so proud of what we’ve accomplished together.? ? Today, our nearly 200 amazing staff members?bring a wealth of experience, fresh data insights, and trusted engagement to every policy discussion, new initiative, and collaboration we undertake. They’re the heart and soul of our organization, and I’m so grateful to have them on my team.? ? I’m honored to serve as our interim director. For nearly 20 years at the CSG Justice Center, I’ve had the privilege of working with governors, legislators, agency officials, justice and health practitioners, and advocates from all sides in dozens of states. Together, we’ve identified and implemented bipartisan solutions that improve accountability, reduce recidivism, expand access to opportunity, and strengthen public safety.? ? We are at a critical moment for leaders to determine how best to improve the safety of our communities and the effectiveness of our justice system. State and local leaders are facing unique challenges and trends that defy a single national narrative.? ? To meet this moment, the CSG Justice Center will be a trusted, useful, and impactful partner to state and local leaders.?? ? We’ll do this by:? ?? delivering rigorous data analysis specific to each state’s unique trends? ?? envisioning new policies and programs based on research that are responsive to the needs of stakeholders? ?? inspiring state and local officials to rebuild trust and remake a more effective, fair, and efficient justice system.? ? No single problem defines, and no single solution will suffice for improving, our justice system. Working together, however, I am confident we have the data, tools, and methods to build a better justice system for all.??

I can solve this puzzle. The Chief of Staff does wield great power. The Chief of Staff, is like , well the First Sergeant or Command Sergeant Major, who get it done. When I was Executive Officer , 2nd in Command, I did not interfere with the First Sergeant, at all. He, or she, was the rt hand person to the Commander, and rank didn't matter, not really. My position was , on the officer level, to be ready to take command in the event the commander was killed, or otherwise unavailable. He or she, also depended upon me to give candid advice. But,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,when the commander made a decision, that was it. Period. The Chief of Staff IS NOT the President, but they are instrumental in many things. What's the purpose of having advisors if you are not gonna listen to them. I listen to my staff here at my law firm, and we discuss all firm policies, and then make the call. I depend upon them for input. No man , or woman , is an island unto themself. Pffffff. The End.

That’s a wrap for the Congressional Black Caucus Foundation’s 53rd Legislative Conference. Whenever you think you’ve seen the highest heights, it’s time to leave your environment. What you’ll find is there’s always another level. Entering into this space where policy is being designed, systems are being reimagined, and lives of Americans are being changed is an example of that other level. There’s tons of work to do in Dallas, so it was important to learn how the people at the highest level are pioneering change so that I can bring it back. This next phase will be historic. #ALC53 #CBCF #CongressionalBlackCaucus

Collaboration strengthens impact, and a Denver area pro bono initiative involving WTO and several other law firms is proving exactly that. WTO’s Kevin Homiak, along with Brownstein Hyatt Farber Schreck’s Jayme Ritchie, spoke to B:CIVIC—an affiliate of the Denver Metro Chamber Leadership Foundation—for an article highlighting how firms are uniting to give back. I’m excited to share that I will soon be joining Medical Teams International to serve as President & CEO. Fundamental to even the notion of “human rights” is the deeper truth of equality—that all humans, simply because they are human, are entitled to certain basic rights.?Not because of what they have done, or the color of their skin, or where they live.?Simply and only because of who they are—human. Likewise, a core tenet of my faith is that every human is divinely created, made in the image of their Creator.?The vast diversity of humankind is itself a reflection of the vastness of God.?And because of this, every human, as an image bearer of God, is of eternal significance and worth.?Every single one. We live in an age where the competition for our eyes, our hearts, and our minds is unrelenting.?So if you are anything like me, it is easy to forget in the swirl of news feeds and stories the very brutal reality faced by millions of humans.?Over 120M humans have been forcibly displaced from their homes because of war, persecution, violence, and natural disasters.?That figure has been increasing every year for well over a decade.?Over 120M humans who find themselves stateless, homeless, often pushed into the most remote and isolated areas where they can so quickly be forgotten. I am honored to be given the opportunity to lead an organization that, for nearly 50 years, has not forgotten.?Medical Teams goes the literal last mile to draw near to millions of suffering and vulnerable humans, providing world-class and life-saving care to the whole person, honoring their humanity, equality, and dignity.?With over 2,500 staff and a vast network of volunteers and partners around the world, Medical Teams provides direct care and services to over 4M humans a year. As I embark on this transition, I am filled with deep gratitude, especially for the place I am leaving.?IJM has been a foundational part of my life for over 20 years, and my employer for almost 11 years.?My experiences with and at IJM have shaped me deeply, both personally and professionally. While it’s hard to leave such a special place, I feel a great sense of peace and excitement for the future, and I am eager to lead Medical Teams into its next chapter!
We are thrilled to introduce Eric Ha as the new President & CEO of Medical Teams International! Eric brings to Medical Teams more than two decades of experience in human rights, international development, and organizational leadership. Most recently, he served as Chief Operating Officer at International Justice Mission. Eric previously practiced law at Sidley Austin LLP and was a law professor at the University of Miami School of Law.?Eric holds a Juris Doctor from the University of Chicago Law School and Bachelor of Arts with Special Honors in Economics from the University of Texas at Austin. He lives in the Washington, D.C. metro area with his wife, Liz, and their three children. Please help us welcome Eric to the team! https://buff.ly/3BLXPM3

I’m not being a hater. Let’s have a serious discussion: Why does any Institution of Higher Education feel that having alums who are delegates to a Political Convention is newsworthy? THERE IS NO PURPOSE! That university is trying to engage in DEMOCRAT PARTY GOTV efforts. Their federal funding should be CUT! There are probably 50 Carolina alums who are delegates. A&T has several delegates and you don’t see their University promoting such a common occurrence. I encourage the Administration at NCCU to stay out of politics and focus on fundraising (which last I read, was quite pathetic). Get some of your alums to stop buying BMWs and give you $100 and perhaps we wouldn’t have to utilize so much of our tax dollars on landscaping over in Durham. Black Institutions must stop playing SMALL BALL. This type of BUSHLEAGUE activity is why Blacks as myself, who took Honors and AP courses and excelled DO NOT EVEN APPLY TO THESE SCHOOLS. #GlorifiedHighSchoolers #PoliticallyCHEAPpeople ??

The long-awaited leadership race for Texas's historic District 18 has finally come to a conclusion, with Erica Lee Carter and Sylvester Turner emerging as the victors. Carter won the special election for the "Unexpired Term" to complete the final term of her late mother, Congresswoman Sheila Jackson Lee, while Turner won the District 18 "Full Term" to serve from January 3, 2025, to January 3, 2027. Despite initial concerns over the potential confusion caused by the double races, voters ensured that both candidates emerged victorious. According to preliminary results, Carter beat her opponent, Maria Dunn, with 69.3% of the early votes, while Turner beat his Republican opponent, Lana Centonze, 70.2% to 29.8%. Both victors expressed their eagerness to get to work and dive straight into what's next for District 18. Carter plans to begin working on her reparations commission effort letter and supporting the Democratic Caucus, while Turner aims to build upon the relationships he has already established with former US Speaker Nancy Pelosi, current House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries, and Congressman Peter Aguila. Turner has laid out his priorities in terms of issues to tackle, including infrastructure improvements, affordable healthcare, affordable housing, and workforce training. With these victories, the two candidates are poised to continue the legacy of District 18's iconic leaders, including Barbara Jordan, Mickey Leland, Craig Washington, and Sheila Jackson Lee. What are your thoughts on the impact of these victories on District 18 and the broader political landscape in Texas? #district18 #texasleadershiprace #ericaleecarter #sylvesterturner #victoriousleaders
