Today marks the last day of February and the last day of Black History Month. Now is an important time to remember that supporting Black and diverse-owned businesses is not our goal for a month, but year-round. We encourage our communities to continue making mindful buying decisions and contribute to the success of Black-owned companies beyond the month of February. Canteen will continue to seek out Women and Minority Owned Businesses for inclusion in our sourcing opportunities. As we step into Black History Month, it’s a time not only to celebrate the rich, diverse heritage of Black culture and its monumental contributions to our shared history but also to reflect deeply on the strides we’ve made towards equality—and the vast distances we’ve yet to travel. This month serves as a powerful reminder of the resilience, strength, and enduring spirit of the Black community, whose contributions have been instrumental in shaping our society. However, celebrating these achievements in words alone is not enough. It is imperative that we, as leaders, move beyond mere acknowledgments and take tangible actions that reflect our commitment to diversity, equity, and inclusion. Our organizations, firms, and companies must not only echo the values of Black History Month in policy but embody them in practice. I challenge you—and myself—to not only celebrate this month through reflection and acknowledgment but to also take definitive steps towards creating more inclusive workplaces. This includes actively working to hire more minorities and people of color, women, men, LGBTQ+, and underrepresented groups, thereby enriching our organizational environments with diverse perspectives, ideas, and innovations. Let’s commit to making our workplaces a reflection of the world we want to live in—one where every individual has the opportunity to thrive, contribute, and succeed. This commitment should be backed by statistics and transparent reporting, ensuring that our actions lead to measurable progress in creating equitable opportunities for all. In the spirit of Black History Month, let’s pledge to not just celebrate in words but in meaningful action. Let us be the leaders who didn’t just speak of change but were instrumental in creating it. Together, we can build organizations that not only stand out for their excellence but also for their unwavering commitment to justice, equality, and inclusivity. #BlackHistoryMonth, #DiversityAndInclusion, #LeadershipForChange, #EqualityInAction, #InclusiveHiring, #CorporateResponsibility, #EquityAtWork, #CulturalDiversity, #EmpowermentThroughDiversity, and #ChangeMakers

??? Why is there a Black Inclusion Week? Black Inclusion Week was launched by Black Leaders, a community of Black professionals and allies who want to make positive and sustainable change. Black Leaders CEO and Founder Paul Sesay said Black Inclusion Week will not only celebrate Black people, but also be a reminder of the importance of “embedding a fair and just society for all.” He also hopes the week will address the inequalities and systemic barriers for Black people across all aspects of society. Action needs to be taken because: ?? Black people are the most likely to have witnessed a racist incident at work, according to the Racism at Work in the UK (2021) report. ?? 41% of Black and minority workers in the UK are suffering racism on the job. ?? Two thirds of Black employees experienced racism in the workplace in 2021. To protect the wellbeing of our Black colleagues and retain Black talent, it is important that organisations directly address anti-black racism and create anti-racist work cultures. ?? I am pleased to announce I have just completed the Black Lives Matter and business RISE activity This is essential in the business world as racial inequality still exists to this day as well as other inequalities such as gender, religion and age. In our digital and professional development we have learnt about the importance of diversity and inclusion which is important in society. In businesses I believe its essential for leaders and organisations to not only support social justice movements but to integrate these values into their strategies, cultures and business models. #humansofmcrmetrise
