“"One of Them Days,” a buddy comedy about two Los Angeles roommates who have nine hours to make rent, is a treat to be gobbled up like pancakes at midnight. Fittingly, one of the heroines, Dreux (Keke Palmer), works the red-eye shift at the Norms restaurant on La Cienega.?That humble 24-hour diner?has been deemed a Historic-Cultural Monument. This too is the kind of casual crowd-pleaser that’s come to feel special: an R-rated hangout movie like “Friday” or “Smiley Face” that might once have been taken for granted but today whose very existence deserves applause." ? Comedy in your content is like chocolate-coating on a bad pill. I took a Stand-up Comedy course last year, and learned a ton. If you speak, market, or sell, just do it. You don't have to become a comedian, but people will be more willing to tolerate a dose of you. (This is me and the great comedian Joe King, shot by the founder of FunnyFest... check out funnyfest.com to learn about courses.)

Action Steps to Get Into Stand-Up Comedy Most of you know me for global tax. But I also perform stand-up comedy. Here’s how you can get started: ? Made someone laugh? Write it down on your phone. ? Find a place where people appreciate your humour, like joke groups on FB. ? Take improv classes, a low-stakes way to perform and have fun. ? Join a comedy course to learn joke writing. ? Start your first gig by talking about yourself. ? Rehearse in low-stakes environments with fellow comedians. ? Go to open mics, learn the craft and keep improving. ? Stay open to new opportunities, everyone’s comedy journey is different. ? Comedy is a continuous journey of practice and learning. And one of the most fun times you’ll ever have! Thinking of getting into comedy? Send me a message!

Every sales person should do Stand Up comedy. After a 3 month workshop and 2 standup shows, I realize that standup comedy is the ultimate sell training. 1) Overcome rejection: many jokes won’t get laughs. Just move on to the next one. 2) Copy Copy Copy. Refining a joke is like refining an email. Write it, test it, re-write ir. Every single word counts. 3) Tonality and pauses are the ultimate key to get the punchline right. Sounds a lot like the key for a discovery call!

What I learned from a StandUp Comedy Show. In comedy, there is something called a callback which is a joke which refers to one previously told in the set. It is also known as an internal allusion, a literary device that helps give structure to the piece of writing. Callbacks are a subset of inside jokes which refer to something told in the set rather than to anything in general. You could adopt the same for copy. Repeat important messages. If you say something early in your content. Say it again in the middle, and also near the end. Repetition makes things stick.

Is this anything? It's the most important question comedians like Jerry Seinfeld ask throughout their writing and creative process. The question is simple and concise, and the action it triggers is profound. Is this [insert your work] anything? To find out, work must be shared with others. Simply asking the question rhetorically or in isolation is like baking chocolate chip cookies using a new recipe without tasting or sharing them. Believe it or not, Seinfeld and other superstar comedians like Chris Rock don't summon stories and one-liners that crush on a whim. They first test new material at small comedy clubs. Some jokes get laughs, others don't. The jokes that fall flat are cut from the set list. The lines that get the most laughs are retained and placed near the start of their next gig. Entirely new material follows, and the is-this-anything iteration cycle continues. When Seinfeld and Rock pack arenas or release Netflix specials, their 60+ minute monologues are the product of months, or even years, of testing and refining material. Is this anything? Ask that question often. Share your work. Ship your product. Keep what works and discard what doesn't.
