All the data regarding sports activities in Italy highlight the persistent territorial disparities in social issues across the country. Despite sport being included in the Italian Constitution a year ago, sport remains inaccessible to many in Italy. In Italy there is a pattern that shows that some categories of people suffer more consequences when it comes to inequality. Access to sport is no exception but foundations, volunteers and non-profit organisations work together every day to leave no one behind. Community Bonding Through Game: How Local Games Shape Social Connections Local and traditional games play a significant role in fostering positive outcomes for various populations, including women, children, and refugees. 1. Physical Fitness and Skills Development: Tag (Chase): A classic game where one player chases others to tag them. It promotes physical activity, agility, and cardiovascular health. Jump Rope: Skipping rope improves coordination, endurance, and cardiovascular fitness. Kabaddi: A team sport that enhances strength, speed, and teamwork. It requires players to tag opponents while holding their breath. Tug of War: Strength, teamwork, and strategy is essential in this game. 2. Psychological Benefits: Chess: A traditional board game that sharpens cognitive skills, strategic thinking, and patience. Mancala: A counting game that stimulates memory, concentration, and problem-solving abilities. Storytelling Games: These encourage creativity, imagination, and language development. 3. Social and Community Building: Local Festivals and Celebrations: Games played during festivals bring people together, strengthen bonds, and create a sense of belonging. Traditional Dances: Dancing fosters cultural identity, social interaction, and emotional expression. About inclusiveness, access and equity.... Australia is without a doubt one of the most inclusive, equitable and fair countries in the world when it comes to down to improve quality of life for people with disabilities. Brisbane will have the honour to host the Special Olympics Brisbane and, this monumental task will come along with significant complexities for the International Olympic Committee – IOC in terms of infrastructure development, security, logistics, supporting organisations and volunteers training. Soft critical infrastructure For instance, how can we ensure that we have adequate supporting infrastructure (besides accommodation and stadium facilities) to activate, mobilise and prioritise the needs of people with dissabilities before, during and after thes Games? Who is responsible for the auditing of public and private assets to ensure relevant actions asap? Would Queensland Government have enough resources to cope with the highly demanding task to protect the general public (including people with dissabilities) from prospectibe security threats? and, as citizens how can we best support them? Showcasing Excellence How do we break in the short-term silos and stigmas associated from various sectors of our society towards people with dissabilities? Can we use these Games as a platform to showcase entrepreneurs with disabilities and build long term programmes upon them (in partnership with corporates through procurement-driven opportunities)? Recognising a deeper level of inclusivess as a whole Also, there is a great opportunity to recognise the work undertaken by volunteers, support workers and even NDIS providers from all over the State by either encouraging to attend the Games or even organising sporting activities that enable us support a deeper level of inclusiveness. Sports promote peaceful, inclusive societies by reaching marginalised groups. Engaging marginalised and vulnerable populations, including children and youth, women and girls, persons with disabilities and refugees through sports has the potential to build their confidence, resilience and skills for positive change. Equally important is the need to document and publish these activities, which is crucial for raising awareness, inspiring action and advocating for change. Bonnie Mah interviewed Ige Egal about his new organization, Play for Dignity, and the right to sport in Canada. "All the benefits of sport have been recognized as necessities for individuals to live a dignified life," he said. "Sport can be a tool to enable those benefits for all. There are international legal frameworks and declarations that recognize this, and Canada has signed on to these. Once we recognize that sport, play, physical activity are rights, we have to make this a reality by building systems that enable participation, accountability, non-discrimination, and empowerment." I recently attended the Special Olympics summit and it was an eye-opening experience as I got to understand the challenges faced by people with intellectual disabilities across the globe. For instance they are not granted equal opportunities, they are discriminated upon and at times because of lack of representation their needs are not catered for My key takeaways were: ??Education and awareness: Learn about different types of disabilities, their experiences, and the challenges they face. This understanding helps dispel stereotypes and stigmatization. ??Employment and learning opportunities: Encourage equal employment and learning opportunities and provide reasonable accommodations to support individuals with disabilities in the workplace and schools. ??Social inclusion: Encourage participation in social activities, sports, and cultural events, and provide accommodations to facilitate involvement. ??Support and resources: Provide access to resources, such as healthcare, rehabilitation services, and assistive technology. ??Disability representation we need to include people with disabilities in media representation, decision-making processes, and leadership positions. In conclusion, creating an inclusive society is an ongoing process that requires effort and commitment from individuals, communities, and organizations. #Violence against #women and #girls is real. We often dont realize how real it is.... Nobody is immune to it, not OLYMPIANS, not ME, not YOU. Yet there is such discomfort in talking about it. We always want to hide it.... from elders, children, peers, family and friends. Perhaps the victims feel shame .. or they want to protect others from sharing their burden. Perhaps thinking that silence would preserve their dignity a tad longer, to hold up their shield from judgement that society so generously offers women, or to protect their loved ones... whispering to themselves in isolation that ignorance is bliss. I have lost count of the times I have heard women say "my partner has issues.. but they would never do something so extreme". Certainly that is what all the women killed by their intimate partners thought until the worst happened. Those who survived maybe walked away thinking its not that serious but its still bad...and guess what... they walked away ALIVE. Normalizing public discourse is a big way to destigmatize gender based violence. Let's pull off the curtain that is literally killing women! Call wrong out in our homes and communities LOUDLY even if it is not 'that serious'. Give the gift of vocabulary around GBV to our children - so our girls and boys are stronger, and can prevent and end violence side by side, hand in hand, TOGETHER. Silence is never ok. The shame is real...but its misplaced .. it does not belong to the victims. For my peers that speak numbers: - Globally, in 2022,1 48,800 women and girls worldwide were killed by their intimate partners or other family members. This means more than five women or girls are killed every hour by someone in their own family. 55% perpetrators are intimate partners or families (UN Women) - In Canada, in 2022, 184 women and girls were violently killed, primarily by men. This means a woman or girl is killed every 48 hours (Canadian Femicide Observatory for Justice and Accountability) - Global costs of GBV have been estimated to be US$1.5 trillion or approximately 2% of global GDP (CARE International) - This is just direct economic cost which is the tip of the iceberg of the loss, damage and impact caused to multiple generations. #GBV #SDG5 #womenrights #women #girls #femicide

From the recent buzz of the Olympics, we can all admit that we were inspired by the incredible talent, dedication and sportsmanship of all those involved. In particular, we were impressed by the young people competing for their country, some of whom haven’t even left school yet!?? Beyond the medals and records, sports holds transformative power especially in Youth Justice. Involvement in sport can help tackle youth crime and violence by offering young people a sense of purpose, discipline and community. ?? In May of 2023, the International Olympic Committee (IOC) and the United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime (UNODC) organized a joint event ‘Team up against Crime: Strengthening the role and contribution of sport in the context of multisectoral partnerships for youth crime prevention.’??????????♀? The purpose of the event was to share and discuss successful projects that had used sport to address youth justice and crime prevention, to help shape future initiatives around the world. When asked about the use of sports in youth justice, Kirsty Coventry of the International Olympic Committee said, “It is a tool which fosters cognitive development; teaches social behaviour, and develops transferable skills that support education and livelihoods.” John?Brandolino?of the UNODC said, “It is critical to?consider innovative and effective approaches to best reach vulnerable youth in marginalised communities.”??? I overheard two of my colleagues arguing about the match on Sunday between #manchester United and Liverpool. ‘omo oooo my team trash una wella,’ na lie, it was a draw oooooooo'. In fact, na we trash una sef. ??????????????. That brought to mind the football matches we had organized at Genius Hub Limited during the Community-based reintegration #CBR program with funding from the European Union and IOM - UN Migration where we demonstrated our commitment to supporting our beneficiaries, especially returned migrants and community members. The Azura-Edo Youth Development Plan (YDP), which began with football matches, was conceived to develop the capacity of the youth in Azura’s host communities of Ihovbor, Orior-Osemwende, and Idunmwowina At Genius Hub Global Initiative , we recognize the critical relationship between #mentalhealth and community based reintegration, which is why our programs prioritize holistic wellness as much as #TVET skills. Mental health remains a core focus of these programs because we believe that increasing mental, emotional, and social is essential for reintegration success. Through our Build and Bond program, we harness the unifying power of sports to foster collaboration, teamwork, and mental wellness among staff and beneficiaries. Sports have been a vital tool in promoting positive shared experiences, and we've embraced that spirit in playful and creative ways, once even channeling Manchester United by pretending to be the team during one of our sporting events. These moments highlighted the ability of sports to bring people together and create lasting bonds. Beyond reintegration and sports, Genius Hub is also advancing innovative solutions through TVET activities and EdTech creativities, blending technology with skills development. We are not just about capacity building; we are about holistic wellness.
