A 16-year-old standard has been updated to allow for changes in the type of gas we will use to fuel our homes and workplaces. Newly revised into an interim standard to meet industry needs, NZS 5442(Int):2024 supports the safe blending of biomethane within the reticulated, or piped, gas network. The final and fully revised version of this standard, which should follow at a later date, is expected to additionally allow blending of hydrogen gas within the gas distribution network, an important step in New Zealand’s adaptation towards more renewable energy sources. Acting Standards Development Manager Nick Ascroft says: ‘While many consumers may be unaware of the type of gas running through their pipes, the changes NZS 5442(Int):2004 sets out have the potential to provide some clarity for installers and manufacturers in the industry and lead the way for more renewable energy sources. Verde Clean Fuels participating in consortium awarded DOE funding for study of zero-emission methanol production technology Verde Clean Fuels, a renewable energy company focused on the development of commercial production facilities to convert syngas derived from diverse feedstocks into gasoline, announced that a consortium led by TDA Research and including Verde, has been awarded funding from the US Department of Energy (DOE) to complete a conceptual design study for a system having the potential of capturing and utilizing ambient CO2 to produce green methanol. Under the award, TDA will design a direct air capture (DAC) process for sourcing of CO2 from the atmosphere and lead the integration of the DAC with the methanol plant. Verde plans to design and model the methanol production unit using its proprietary STG+ technology, with the goal to utilize CO2 from the DAC, and hydrogen from a carbon-free source, to produce green methanol. Biogas and biomethane are renewable fuels that are helping to decarbonise our energy systems. While biogas is mainly useful for localised heat and power applications, biomethane is a highly versatile fuel that offers significant benefits. These include: ???Greater energy efficiency: Due to its higher methane content, RNG has greater energy density, which makes it more efficient than biogas. Biomethane has an LHV of around 36 MJ/m3, which makes it suitable for providing consistent energy output for applications like industrial power supply and heavy transport. ?????Long-term storage and transport: Biomethane can be converted to a liquid form (Bio-LNG) or compressed into tube trailers (Bio-CNG). In these formats, it can be stored and transported easily to any location, where it can be used as fuel for LNG- or CNG-powered vehicles. CNG can also be injected directly into the existing gas grid and used interchangeably with fossil natural gas. ???Energy security and independence: Because biomethane is produced domestically, it reduces reliance on imported fuels. Biomethane can be liquefied, stored, and used to provide a consistent source of energy that’s not weather-dependent, unlike wind or solar power.
