If you're wondering how we've kept at it all these years, watch this clip! Edie knows what we know: There's no substitute for seeing the lightbulb go on in a young person's eyes! There's no substitute for running into a teacher you've worked with and getting good news about a student or program's progress. The Stanford Center on Longevity identified three reasons why people don't volunteer, even though 90% of us reportedly want to (it improves our physical health and cognitive function). In my experience, volunteering with schools responds to them all: 1) Volunteer schedules are too inflexible/ it takes too much time: Schools can offer volunteers all sorts of scheduling flexibility because they often operate with "rolling day" schedules, which means that your "Day 1 of 8" commitment to help out with Music or Careers or whatever your jam is, won't always fall on a Monday or Friday. You can absolutely schedule your life around your volunteer commitments at a school. Taking a benchmark birthday or anniversary trip? Just let the school know "In the second term of next year, I'll be gone for a week". They only need advance notice. 2) Most volunteer roles aren't interesting: Listen to Edie in this clip, she talks about how as she spent more time in the classroom, her volunteer roles evolved to include more one-on-one time with students. Knowing you helped a child master their times tables, a crisis of confidence in reading or preparing for a test is a game-changer. But of course, you have to demonstrate to teachers that you can get that job done before they'll give it to you. "Plum assignments" always go to top performers, don't they? But trust me, the minute teachers know "you're for real", they'll ask you to do more, because they need the help. 3) No one asked me: The shortage of teachers/ aids/ school staff and resources is not a secret. Many schools today do have a vetting process for volunteers (as they should), but if you are committed to helping a school deliver on it's mandate, they'll find a way for you to make a contribution. I've been volunteer-teaching primarily 10-14 year olds how to think before they buy for almost 9 years. I've learned how to structure content so that it easily fits into lesson plans, engages students, and doesn't create pre or post-workshop administration for teachers. I show up on time, conduct workshops, and leave. I make one follow-up request for feedback, in service of keeping workshops as engaging as possible. I've seen the Edies of this world in countless settings. We always give each other a knowing smile. Vendavo offers 16 hours of annual paid volunteer time to each employee so we can all give back to causes that matter to us. But this is something my family does outside of that.? ? This year I volunteered for the?Jackson Chance Foundation, and this one really hit home for me. Jackson Chance Foundation assists families with NICU-bound children by covering parking fees. My son spent a significant amount of time in the NICU, so I know what that’s like.?? ? Not having to worry about expensive parking fees during such a trying time was a weight off our shoulders for my wife and me. It gave us the freedom to visit our son, step away to run errands, and come back to spend more time with him – all without additional financial stress layered atop everything else.?? ? This cause means so much to us that we set aside money on birthdays and the anniversary of our son’s “come home day” to make contributions.? ? There are little lessons like that everywhere. Openings for solutions that can help make others’ days a little less stressful or a little easier. Opportunities that matter a lot to the people on the other end of the experience.?? ? "We didn't include our local community in our last strategic planning process and they noticed." A nonprofit said this to me recently with regret. One of their goals is to grow their local community support but they did not listen to them when deciding what to do next. They missed the opportunity to > Engage their community's enthusiasm for the organization > Learn about the community's needs and interests AND > Build buy-in for the new ideas the org wants to implement ?? This is what they forgot. ?? Listening isn't about letting others make decisions for you - it's about making informed decisions that include your community. Here's what I told them; If your community is a part of your goals you NEED to listen to them. When you do, you'll have the knowledge of HOW to keep them engaged and active in the ways that help your mission. While it's never too late to include your community in your decision-making, the longer you wait the farther you will be from succeeding your community-dependent goals. How do you include your community in decisions that are dependent on them?

That's why our friends at Blue Cross and Blue Shield of Texas packed up two cars full of unused office supplies and drove them all the way from Dallas to our side of Fort Worth! We had to force them to all stop working for a minute so we could commemorate this joining-of-forces! Who can submit for a grant? 1. Teachers, paraprofessionals, administrators, and other educators in the Ellington elementary, middle and high schools. 2. Students must have a sponsor who is an educator within the school district and will oversee use of grant funds. 3.
