To echo German MEP Terry Reintke, Europe needs to be the leading force in green technology and economy! Big thank you to POLITICO Europe for organising such an insightful and thought-provoking event on "Europe's Road to Sustainable Competitiveness." I had a wonderful time attending and representing The Regional Environmental Centre for the Caucasus (REC Caucasus). I would also like to express my appreciation to all the distinguished speakers who shared their invaluable insights and perspectives: - Heike Prinz, Labor Director and Chief Talent Officer at Bayer AG, for emphasizing the importance of creating the right framework conditions for industries to thrive while meeting sustainability targets. - Johan Hanssens, Secretary General at the Department of Economy, Science, and Innovation, Flemish Government, for highlighting the urgent need for coordinated action at the European level to achieve climate neutrality by 2050. - Kurt Vandenberghe, Director General of DG CLIMA, European Commission, for outlining the EU's international agenda on climate action and the imperative of a comprehensive industrial strategy for a successful green transition. - Marco Mensink, Director General of the European Chemical Industry Council (Cefic), for stressing the significance of implementing the Antwerp Declaration and mobilizing investments for green transformation. - MEP Terry Reintke, Co-President of the Greens/EFA Group, for emphasizing the dual importance of sustainability and competitiveness and the need for targeted investments to drive the green transition. The event underscored the imperative of integrating sustainability into our economic policies and fostering innovation to drive Europe towards a greener, more competitive future. CIVIL SOCIETY RECOMMENDATIONS ADDRESSED TO LEADERS AT THE BERLIN SUMMIT Over 115 representatives from various organizations gathered in Skopje for the Civil Society Preparatory Forum, where they were divided into seven working groups to draft key recommendations for the governments of the Western Balkan countries (WB6) and European ones. This initiative was part of civil society’s integral involvement in the Berlin Process. These recommendations were further refined and opened for discussion during the main forum held from October 9-11 in Berlin. During this forum, civil society rapporteurs had the opportunity to directly engage with decision-makers and other key actors. PPNEA, as the civil society rapporteur for environmental issues in the region, led the working group on "Environmental Protection and Sustainable Economic Development." This group produced a set of recommendations addressed to the governments of the Western Balkans (WB6), European countries involved in the Berlin Process, and European Union institutions. These recommendations were presented directly to the leaders during the Berlin Process Summit, which took place on October 14, 2024.
