“You now need to think more about how your device is going to be used and how it's going to be incorporated into the practice of medicine. So first and foremost, if your technology converts an in-hospital to an out-of-hospital procedure, or it allows earlier discharge or in some way, shape, or form shortens that episode of care within the hospital, that's really, really important. Even if your technology is better but it adds a two-day stay, that may be a tough sell.” Meet the CEO of Canary Medical Inc., Dr. Bill Hunter, who was previously instrumental in the development of #medicaldevices like the TAXUS drug-eluting coronary stent, paclitaxel-eluting balloons, and the Zilver PTX peripheral drug-eluting stent. Bill’s extensive career as a practitioner and notable successes in the #medtech space are truly impressive. After spearheading the successes of companies Angiotech Pharmaceuticals and CORREVIO PHARMA CORP., he’s now at the forefront of bringing novel digital solutions to healthcare. At Canary, Bill and his team are developing smart implants that empower patients by providing real-time insights during their recovery journey after implant surgeries. Here’s a taste of Bill’s interview with Scott Nelson: ?? Identify market opportunities by examining trends and structural gaps. Bill, for example, noticed the demand for personalized patient care and the strain on healthcare providers, leading him to develop digital solutions. ??Innovation in medtech requires a superior, not just an alternative, product approach framework. Consider how your idea streamlines processes, reduces hospital stays, and empowers both patients and physicians. ?? If you’re a physician contemplating a full-time move to a startup, embrace your entrepreneurial spirit by leveraging the stability of your medical career. Start small, experiment, and be honest with yourself about your priorities. Check out the full interview link with Bill in the comments below. This Medsider episode was brought to you by FastWave Medical, a hot IVL startup in the cardiovascular space. Don’t miss out on their next fundraise (more details in the comments). ?? Embracing Disruptive Innovation: The Imperative Choice of Adaptation over Resistance. ??Clayton Christensen's theory of disruptive innovation suggests that new technologies or approaches can disrupt existing markets by offering simpler, more affordable solutions that initially cater to overlooked or underserved segments. ??In the context of interventional pain and specialties like spine surgery, disruptive innovations might involve less invasive procedures, outpatient alternatives, or technology-driven solutions that challenge traditional, more invasive methods. These innovations could potentially improve patient outcomes and reduce costs, creating a shift in the healthcare landscape. ??Pearls: 1. **Introduction of a New Technology or Approach:** ??Disruption begins with the introduction of a new, often simpler or more affordable, technology or approach that may initially seem inferior to existing solutions. 2. **Focus on Underserved Markets:** ??The new innovation typically targets underserved or overlooked market segments that are not well-addressed by existing products or services. This allows the disruptive technology to gain a foothold. 3. **Incremental Improvement:** ??Over time, the disruptive technology undergoes incremental improvements, gradually closing the performance gap with established solutions. This may initially go unnoticed by incumbents in the industry. 4. **Rapid Advancement:** ??The disruptive innovation eventually advances rapidly, surpassing the capabilities of established products or services. This can lead to a significant shift in the market dynamics. 5. **Mainstream Adoption:** ??As the disruptive technology matures, it gains acceptance in mainstream markets, causing a fundamental transformation in the industry and often leading to the decline of established players who fail to adapt. ??These steps illustrate the process by which disruptive innovations, initially considered inferior, evolve and ultimately reshape industries by meeting the evolving needs of consumers in a more efficient or effective manner. Is disruptive innovation, per Clay's theory, impacting interventional pain management as it has in diverse medical fields, hinting at potential disruptions in procedures performed by today's internationalists? ?? Answer: Certainly. Without a doubt, comprehending this theory allows for either adaptation or risking failure by attempting to combat it, as this marks the initial phase of the disruptive innovation process. Incumbents typically initially attempt to thwart it through various avenues, but these endeavors consistently prove unsuccessful. #medicalindustry #disruption #turfmanagement #innovation #technology

Folks, one thing has become crystal clear as we navigate the aftermath of COVID: health should be at the top of our priority list. For many of us, this goes not just for ourselves but for our loved ones. MedTech innovators in Baltimore understand this well, so it's no wonder Baltimore is leading the MedTech innovation scene. In March, Maryland was even chosen to host MedTech Innovator (MTI) and BioTools Innovator (BTI). The city wants to create the right environment for companies that want to bring technologies to market that can help many lives. Companies that not just make better inventions but tackle real challenges of healthcare costs and efficiency. I can't help but admire the people making these significant steps forward. They don't just enhance healthcare overall, but they do it with empathy and inclusivity. https://lnkd.in/edJDfS5i. #Baltimore #MedTech #Founders #MedicalDevices #HarborDesigns
