Mental health counseling intern. Therapist, per my contract. Pursuing my Master's in mental health counseling. Person-centered, solution-focused, strength-based. Anthropology and philosophy in anamnesis.
Today, I finished my Diagnosis and Treatment Planning course. I don't have the right to diagnose you, yet, but I will diagnose you (to myself). ;) My new blogpost is my reflection on the course and a reflection about the intricacies of diagnosing. When is diagnosis useful, and when is diagnosis not useful? For I can imagine both situations... https://lnkd.in/ekJwN9Js

?? Hi, I'm Beck... and I'm soooooo OCD... ?? "Really? But your bookshelf is a complete tip, you're allergic to spreadsheets, and I'm sureeee I saw you wearing odd socks the week before last!?" Yep - that's right - but, for me at least, my OCD has no bearing on any of those things! ??? October is OCD Awareness Month, so I thought I'd take the opportunity to share a little bit about my own experience - if you'll hear me! I was first diagnosed back in 2019 following a very rough patch, and at the time, my perception of OCD was exactly the same! ?? How could I, the master of avoiding the washing up, have been diagnosed with the infamous 'neatness disorder'? ?? Well, after a steep learning curve, and a wealth of insight from the fantastic NOCD community, I've been able to pinpoint where my obsessions and compulsions lie, what triggers them - and critically - how to manage them more effectively. Arguably most importantly, I've been able to recognise that my experience of OCD is valid - even though it may not reflect many people's idea of how Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder manifests itself... My OCD Isn't: ? Washing my hands obsessively ? Organising my socks into spots & stripes ? Obsessing over germs or feeling unclean ? Stressing over the alignment of my keyboard & mouse Although, for some, it very well may be! My OCD IS: ? Constantly panicking that I've forgotten something essential, even when I’ve triple-checked everything ? Replaying conversations in my head for days, convinced I've said something wrong or hurtful ? Feeling an overwhelming sense of responsibility for things completely out of my control ? Constantly asking for reassurance on the same thing, even though I know the answer won't help ? Being convinced that people don't take me seriously, precisely because of the above behaviours! ?? If there's anyone in my network who is experiencing OCD themselves, or knows someone who is, I can't recommend the NOCD resources enough! It's a fantastic community, with loads of tools, courses, and insights to help you navigate thoughts, feelings, and compulsions more constructively: https://lnkd.in/en9rhssc Also, if anyone has any questions about OCD - particularly in the workplace - don't be afraid to reach out! #OCDAwareness #OCDAwarenessMonth #ObsessiveCompulsiveDisorder #MentalHealthAwareness #WellbeingatWork #OCD #NOCD

The voice of people experiencing eating disorders and their family/supports is important in developing our understanding of eating disorders, including ARFID. For a person experiencing ARFID, there may be one or more reasons behind the avoidance, aversion or restriction of food and eating. Sometimes, there is no clear reason. This means that the experience of ARFID will be different in one person compared to another and the treatment process and sequence can be confusing. The identified target of the treatment may also not be clear – is it the restriction, avoidance, and/or aversion that needs to be addressed first? And which professionals are needed in the care team to address these difficulties? It is important to establish a care team that addresses all aspects of the ARFID presentation and whole experience of the individual. The care team should work collaboratively with aligned goals to provide safe and effective treatment. This should include a medical practitioner and dietitian to address nutritional and medical aspects of the illness, and may also include a mental health professional, occupational therapist and/or speech pathologist depending on the difficulties the person is experiencing. Peer support can be an important part of recovery. ?? More information on EDAW, ARFID and the care team can be found at https://lnkd.in/ghP_KzDq #edaw2024 #ARFID #EatingDisordersAwarenessWeek
