The number of companies that assign their HR/People function to someone in a finance, legal, or admin role still shocks me. Even more, I often see executives who oversee HR with zero experience in the function. You would never assign the tasks of a CFO, CTO, or CMO to another team so why is it okay to task someone with no subject matter experience to oversee the most critical assets - aka the people! - of your company? This is where fractional HR comes in. If companies can't afford a full time HR pro, hire an experienced leader ( ????♀? ) for a fraction of the cost to spot issues before they arise and to leverage their experience to mitigate risk, optimize processes and costs, and to create a better experience for the entire team. Your people are worth the investment. www.jackyturnbull.com ***** Editing to add a clarifying point to my post because I received a note from someone whom I greatly respect sharing a differing perspective (thank you!). I do not mean that an HR function shouldn't report into another functional leader such as a CFO, GC, COO, etc. In my career thus far, finance and legal teams are usually where I find my strongest partners, champions, and coaches. HR reporting into these leaders can be beneficial in many ways. My thought is about companies which don't have an HR department and instead assign people-related tasks to their payroll team, attorneys, executives, or receptionists (as a few examples) without giving those people the resources to be successful. Those are opportunities where I think it's beneficial to bring in fractional HR to help provide expertise to those who are learning HR as a function of their expanded role.

What do you do? Oh, I'm an administrator/assistant/payroll officer/recurrent consultant/manager...... Those have been some of my responses throughout the years. I identified as my job. Not only that, outside of work, I also use to talk about work, think about work stuff, and use to associate things in my personal life with work. 'I am' is such a powerful statement. So, consider this: Who would you be if you weren't in the job you are in right now? What would you do if you weren't doing what you do now? Who are you outside and separate from work? If you are finding it hard to find out, now is the time to take action and change that.

Here are a few tips to make farmworker onboardings smoother and faster from witnessing countless Harvust grower hiring events. These are in no particular order and are so easy you could try them on your next hire: - Play low music in background?so it's not so awkwardly quiet. - Have adequate seating because people are going to be waiting around no matter how fast your process is. - Please have signs pointing out bathrooms for brand new people. - Separate candidates into those with a phone and without. Those without a phone shouldn't make those with a phone wait extra long. - Ask workers to fill out documents on their own, some documents are simple enough they can do this while you focus on complicated documents like the I-9. - Ask workers to take a selfie for their employee ID badge photos: saves you time and hassle. - Have multiple hiring stations but one line, so people don't feel the need to strategize lines like at the grocery store. - Good lighting is critical if you want to scan IDs and have the info pre-populate the employee's I-9. - Hold your hiring event in a location with good cell service and WiFi: this will enable your laptop to work better, and workers to use their phones. - Have employees do their training while they wait: saves them time. - Give each new hire your business card: start building that HR relationship now. - Have water for yourself: you're going to be doing a lot of talking I write a lot on agriculture HR and tips for ag employers, and at www.harvust (.) com
