*?????????????? ??????????????: Sensitive Content* ???????? ???????? ?????????????????? ?????? ?????????????? ???? ?????????????? ???? ?????? ?????????????? ???? ???????????????? ????????????????????????. Two weeks ago I experienced a really traumatic event of witnessing an animal being killed on the motorway. It happened right in front of us, a pheasant had made it’s way into the 4th lane of traffic and couldn’t get over the concrete barrier. It tried to go back but the car to our left hit it, leaving it panicking trying to escape but with nowhere to go. I still think about it often and get really upset remembering it. My commute to work involves travelling for 15 minutes on the M1 between Barnsley and Sheffield, and I’ve noticed more roadkill than ever before. The only time I’ve ever seen a badger and a fox in real life they’ve been dead at the side of the road. Smart motorways have been built to accommodate more drivers than ever, but what is being done to protect wildlife? Data from Confused.com shows that in 2022 there were 5,976 roadkill reports across Great Britian. But bear in mind that only 1 in 7 people report it when they hit an animal. Perhaps unsurprisingly, the M1 and the M6 were the roads that had the most reports. So this has got me thinking: what is seeing this doing to our emotions before we even get into work? I can’t be the only one who feels upset seeing a steady stream of dead animals on the road. And what work is being done by local councils and the government to mitigate harm and protect wildlife? Could we be doing more? Badger Trust say there are 40 mitigations available to reduce the risk of wildlife mortality. Which of these are being utilised by Barnsley Council, Sheffield City Council and National Highways? The 'Give Badgers a Brake' campaign from Badger Trust has been great for raising awareness of things we can do individually and in infrastructure to make the world better for animals. Let's work together to protect our wildlife and create safer roads for all. If you have suggestions, experiences, or ideas to share, I’d love to hear them. #WildlifeConservation #UKWildlife #AnimalWelfare The Wildlife Trusts Yorkshire Wildlife Trust

In wildlife rehabilitation, we normally focus solely on how such care benefits wildlife and our ecosystems. However, writer?Margaret Renkl eloquently describes how wildlife rehabilitation can heal both the animals being cared for?and the humans who, with their whole hearts invested, go above and beyond to care for and protect wildlife. "Rehabbers go to extraordinary lengths to save every injured animal. If they can’t save the animal, they can at least give it a merciful death. And they can take the opportunity to explain why it’s so important to walk the yard before mowing, giving wildlife of all kinds a chance to flee. Each animal in rescue represents a human being who has learned something important about living more gently in the world. Rehabilitating the human heart may be the most important work these organizations do." - Margaret Renkl https://lnkd.in/gn2atWWW

Wade Crowfoot just curious when these structures are installed has thought gone into soil media to support vegetation growing on the installation? I ask because soil media can be amended with forest derived biochar. This would help to keep vegetation green longer, with less clay (weight) on the structure. Then there is the fact that using forest derived biochar can also reduce risk of ignition and spread of fire in the same habitat.
One of my favorite priorities to work on is wildlife crossings??, which help animals move safely across our lands and protect motorists. In an era of thorny environmental challenges, animal deaths from our roads is a fixable problem.?? Wildlife crossings are a win-win solution??that help people & nature thrive together. This morning, I helped launch California Wildlife Reconnected??, a landmark public-private partnership to build more wildlife crossings. The incredible Beth Pratt and the National Wildlife Federation have brought together philanthropy & government to get more crossings built, more quickly. Which is critical to protect our renowned biodiversity in decades to come. This effort was inspired?? by the largest wildlife crossing in the world that Caltrans is currently building outside of LA, thanks to the Annenberg Foundation, the Wildlife Conservation Board, and so many others. More on today’s launch here: https://lnkd.in/gvuVFNda Let’s go! ???

Big cats are beautiful. Majestic. Powerful. Over the past few year headlines were made by entertainers using their pet cats in shows and Canada is no excepting. According to a survey in 2019 there were 2383 tigers as pets in Canada. That did not include cats living in private entertainment sites like roadside zoos or menageries. Like apex predators in other ecosystems, these animals play a significant role in the overall health of that system. When they disappear, the local ecosystem becomes unhealthy, wobbling, becoming destabilized or even collapsing. It's a reaction chain referred to as the "Tropic Cascade". In Canada, not only are foreign exotics banned but our native mountain lions (aka cougars, pumas) are also prohibited as pets. While keeping some exotic pets may vary from Province to Province, when it comes to cats in Canada, only the common domestic cat is allowed as a pet. Check the local Humane Society or your local Wildlife Management department for more information. * David Shepherd Wildlife Foundation: https://ow.ly/1F6t50SLNPM * World Wildlife Fund: https://ow.ly/uZtU50SLNPN * World Animal Protection: https://ow.ly/Xm0Z50SLNPO. #InternationalTigerDay #Tigers #AllInThisTogether #Earth #Biodiversity #Water #AquaticBiosphere
