The Disadvantaged Business Enterprise (DBE) Program is under legal threat, jeopardizing opportunities for minority- and women-owned businesses. NAMC, alongside key partners, is taking action to protect this critical program and ensure equitable access to government contracts. As Wendell R. Stemley , NAMC National President, stated: “The DBE program provides important opportunities for minority-owned businesses and should be expanded to meet the demand of rebuilding our infrastructure, not gutted.” The NAMC - DFW Chapter stands in full support of this effort. (??????) ??????????????, established by the U.S. Department of Transportation, provides a fair opportunity for small businesses owned by socially and economically disadvantaged individuals to compete for federally assisted highway, transit, and airport-related transportation contracts. ?????????????????? ?????? ?????????????? ??????????: The DBE program works to remove barriers and prevent discrimination based on race, color, national origin, age, sex, or disability. This ensures small businesses are not excluded from important contracting opportunities. ?????????? ??????????????: Business owners like Steve Rhoades, a Native American owner of S.T. Rhoades Construction, have experienced setbacks. “It’s really discouraging when you put in the effort and have the best prices, only to find out that you were not considered,” Rhoades shared. His story highlights the need for continued progress. ???????????????? ????????????: As of August 2024, Caltrans surpassed its 2022-2024 DBE goal with 22.45% participation. The new DBE goals for 2025-2027 will be announced soon, furthering the mission of providing equitable access to state contracts. ???????? ???????????? ??????????????: By ensuring that small businesses can compete fairly, the DBE program helps foster economic growth and opportunity, especially for underrepresented groups. ?? The U.S. Department of Transportation’s Disadvantaged Business Enterprise (DBE) program has played a critical role in supporting minority-owned businesses, awarding nearly $34 billion in federal transportation contracts over the past five years. So it's disheartening to see the recent legal challenges facing this critical program. If upheld, this ruling could have significant consequences for diverse businesses in the #AEC industry, potentially impacting billions of dollars in federal funding. These legal challenges can potentially undermine efforts to promote diversity and inclusion in public contracting. It is a stark reminder of the broader threat to the progress we've made in fostering opportunities for underrepresented groups. We must remain vigilant in defending programs that help level the playing field and ensure diverse voices and businesses continue to have a seat at the table in the AEC space.
