I am beyond delighted that we're now at the point of inviting you all to join us at the launch of the Eating Disorder Safe principles, along with the Companion Document, 'First Nations Perspectives: Strengthening the Eating Disorder Safe Principles.' The Eating Disorder Safe principles will be transformational. To (clumsily) paraphrase Dr Bryn Austin at Harvard STRIPED, diet culture and weight stigma are pervasive; they're in the air that we breathe. If we want to reduce rates of eating disorders, disordered eating and body image distress, we need to clear the air. That's what it will mean to be Eating Disorder Safe. On a personal level, this milestone feels really significant. After eight years of working to create policy-level, whole-of-community approaches to eating disorder prevention, to be on the brink of launching something that will effect change across health, education, sport, media, policy, research, workplaces and beyond feels pretty great. Huge thanks to everyone who has collaborated on this project to get it to where it is today. The insights and expertise of our Expert Advisory Group, our First Nations Governance Group, team members, student researchers and many others have all combined to make something that will be so much richer and so much more impactful for each of their contributions. Want to know more about this important culture change initiative? Drop me a line! Otherwise, see you at the launch ??

?? How we communicate about health, food,?minds,?and bodies can significantly impact people's body image and eating habits. If you want to ensure your home, workplace, community, and services create safe spaces for people to talk about these aspects of daily life ?The Eating Disorder Safe Principals are ready for you! ? I'm so excited to have these principles developed by the National Eating Disorders Collaboration in collaboration with La Trobe University out in the world. As a member of the Expert Advisory group for this project, I've had the chance to work with a group of passionate and talented people who have provided their knowledge and experience to ensure that these principles are accessible and easily implemented by a range of people. These principles tie directly into the National Eating Disorders Strategy 2023-33, which provides a roadmap for?improving Australia's response to eating disorders and will also be released with a First Nations-specific Companion Document to the Eating Disorder Safe principles to ensure that cultural safety and key community considerations are integrated into all Eating Disorder Safe projects. Whether you're an educator, researcher, policy developer, parent, health practitioner, journalist, or advocate, these principles aim to guide how information about health, food, minds, and bodies is provided to people across settings. Join us for the online launch! ?? Date: 24 July 2024 ?? Time: 12-1pm AEST https://lnkd.in/g-iX6Sa9

Understanding the symptoms and seeking early treatment is key to preserving eye health. Common symptoms include redness, blurred vision, and light sensitivity. If you experience any of these signs, it’s important to consult with an eye care professional. Social prescribing in the suicide prevention and AOD space really needs more attention. I’m currently working with a former veteran who struggles with being able to access and remain engaged in care mostly due to ‘office hours’ or ‘wait time’ for when they summon the strength to reach out for help. When life becomes overwhelming for them, they disconnect and get labeled as ‘non compliant’ or any other number of labels that pathologise them as a ‘problematic patient’ because current service models are not equipped to meet them in their hour of need. I’ve been able to advocate for them with community psychiatry, veteran services and NDIS to support a peer based approach. If it hadn’t been for this advocacy this person would have been placed under guardianship and removed many of their basic rights to be able to have choice, consent and control over their own care. Social prescribing provides a new opportunity for us to meet health consumers where they are in their health seeking journey. Modern medicine and other health interventions demonstrate great efficacy, but only represent those that can engage and participate in such studies. I hope social prescribing will forge a new path forward built on addressing Marmott’s eloquent discussion on social determinants of health as being just as relevant as other basic vitals monitored by the nursing/medical professionals. As a peer worker, and someone with a lived experience of both AOD and suicidal crisis, I was lucky to have the social capital of being a white male, and having the financial backing of a family that was wealthy in contrast to most of the people I work with daily. I’m all for evidenced based health interventions, but too often I see that they lack empathy, compassion or understanding of what engagement/compliance really means from a consumer’s perspective.
Congratulations to the team at the Mitchell Institute on the publication of their review of social prescribing as a novel approach to suicide prevention by addressing the social determinants of health. The NSPO is proud to have supported this important work. To access the paper: https://lnkd.in/gUngdDTh
