In a world where economic disparity continues to hinder the progress of Black and Brown entrepreneurs, founders, small business owners, and creators, one significant avenue to bridge the wealth gap lies in brand partnerships. However, a major hurdle remains: underrepresentation and inequitable access to lucrative brand deals. ?? The Hurdle: Despite the growing recognition of the buying power and cultural influence of Black and Brown communities, these entrepreneurs often face systemic barriers in securing brand partnerships. A 2022 study revealed that only 2% of marketing dollars are allocated to Black-owned media and businesses. This disparity not only limits growth opportunities but also perpetuates the wealth gap. ?? The Stats: Black-owned businesses generate 50% less revenue on average compared to their non-Black counterparts. A 2021 report by the National Bureau of Economic Research highlighted that Black and Brown founders receive less than 3% of total venture capital funding. ????Actionable Steps to Overcome the Hurdle: 1??. Equitable Access: Corporations must commit to diversity in their partnerships. Establishing transparent criteria for brand deals and actively seeking out minority-owned businesses is a critical step. 2??. Mentorship and Networking: Providing access to mentorship programs and exclusive networking events can help Black and Brown entrepreneurs connect with potential partners and investors. 3??. Educational Resources: Offering workshops on brand negotiation and financial literacy ensures that these entrepreneurs can leverage deals effectively. 4??. Policy Advocacy: Pushing for policies that incentivize corporations to partner with minority-owned businesses can create a more inclusive economic landscape. ??? Recently, RMMFI teamed up with Small Business Majority to host the Inclusive Small Business Roundtable. This exciting forum brought together diverse entrepreneurs, policymakers, and agency leaders. This intimate, invite-only event fostered honest conversations about the challenges small business owners face, including access to capital, affordable childcare, healthcare, tax compliance, and creating an inclusive entrepreneurial ecosystem. Let’s celebrate #SmallBusinessWeek with some inspiring news! According to recent reporting from The Associated Press, there’s been a surge in new #smallbusiness ventures since 2020 with a record-breaking 5.5 million new business applications filed in 2023 alone. Frost's payroll service partner Gusto also surveyed 1,300 new business owners and found: - Women accounted for 49% of the new business owners surveyed, a significant increase from 2019. - Black entrepreneurs made up 6% of new business owners in 2023, double the 3% rate seen before the pandemic. - Hispanic entrepreneurs made up 13% of new owners, compared to 8% last year. This trend further underscores the entrepreneurial spirit and innovation within our communities. Black entrepreneurs always overcome, but we need to talk about one of the most common challenges they face: limited access to resources and funding. VC funding for Black-owned businesses fell 71% in the U.S. last year, and funding for Black businesses continues to make up less than 1% of all VC support. Black business ownership is growing at the fastest pace in 30 years. For most of these entrepreneurs, their business is their primary source of income. Supporting Black-owned businesses doesn't stop at purchases—it’s about investing in a more equitable and thriving economy.
