One Week Working Remotely in Cape Town – Here’s What Stood Out ???? It’s been a week since I started working remotely in Cape Town, and a few things have really hit home. ?? The Reality of Poverty South Africa’s beauty is undeniable, but so is its struggle. 55% of the population lives below the national poverty line, and extreme poverty is everywhere. It’s heartbreaking—and a stark reminder of the work that still needs to be done. ?? Y’all Hiring? South Africa has one of the highest youth unemployment rates in the world. Over 60% of young people (15-24) are unemployed. That’s millions of bright, ambitious minds without opportunities. ?? The Talent is Top-Tier The people here? Hardworking, kind, and incredibly skilled. English is a first language, and with UK-friendly time zones, it’s no surprise that South African-to-UK recruitment agencies are booming. Companies in the UK can hire top-tier talent at a fraction of the cost. Despite the challenges, there’s a palpable sense of optimism in South Africa. I truly believe my wonderful country will continue to rise. ???? Today's post reflects on my thoughts for the past four years, ever since I decided to change my career path. When I began my career, it was clear that although there's immense potential for economic growth in Africa, particularly in the Kenyan corporate sector, progress is unfortunately slow. Policies like the recently rejected Finance Bill in Kenya make it challenging for companies to thrive and hence securing a well-paying job with promising career progression is for the lucky few. This forces many of us in developing countries to look beyond our borders to contribute our skills, experience, and knowledge to earn a decent living and build our careers. Remote work has been a significant shift in the corporate world, enabling people from all over the globe to contribute to impactful projects. The benefits are numerous: workers enjoy flexibility in their daily routines, reclaim their time, save on transportation and lunch costs, earn higher incomes, and companies save on office rent! However, as most remote companies are based in the West, African candidates often face cultural barriers, misogynoir, and racial biases. I once interviewed for a role where the recruiter implied I should be "grateful" for the offered pay and not negotiate since I am African. Ironically, this same company had a DEI department ??. Another recruiter was surprised I understood the Western job market, implying, "Wow! You have internet there, and you're actually intelligent." Despite successful interviews with hiring managers, I was rejected after multiple rounds due to my location, even though it was clear from the beginning that I am based in Kenya. These same hiring managers ended up hiring someone from Europe, in a similar time zone. Many of these companies claim to be "global" on their Teams Page, boasting candidates from all over the world, but on closer inspection, their "world" only consists of three continents - North America, Europe, and Australia. Hmm...I wonder why ?? The blockchain space has connected me with incredibly talented individuals from all over the world, especially from Africa. As we work to improve our economies and create better opportunities in our countries, I hope companies seeking a global workforce do the necessary work to unpack their racial prejudices, foster cultural awareness, and offer equal opportunities to all candidates. The expertise that Josh, a white man from Santa Monica, brings to a role is the same that Akoth, a black woman from Nairobi, offers. #remotework #recruiting #globaleconomy #jobmarket #hiringprocess
